Our Mission:  We gather to inspire spiritual growth, care for each other and our community, seek truth and act for justice.

Upcoming Worship Services!

Sunday, February 5th - 9 & 11 a.m.

"Standing on the Side of Love"  We take the title for this service from the UU hymn that has become the anthem for human rights work in our Unitarian Universalist Association. One of the ways we UU's stand on the side of love is by supporting families of all shapes and sizes and configurations. In this multigenerational service Rev. Roberta and Director of Religious Education Martha Dallas will weave the stories of families from our congregation into an inclusive and celebratory worship experience

Sunday, February 12th - 9 & 11 a.m.

"The Love That Makes the World Go Round"   A few days before Valentine's Day Reverend Roberta will reflect on the kind of love that transcends greeting cards and flowers and chocolates . As we kick-off our annual budget drive let's remember the many ways we have given and received love as we reignite the precious connections that will sustain our beloved community

What is a Committee on Ministry?
A Committee on Ministry focuses on all aspects of the congregation's ministry, including professional leadership, music, social justice, religious education, spiritual care, small group ministry and so on. The Committee on Ministry functions as a vision or oversight group.

Pick up a pamphlet and talk with a member of the Provisional Committee on Ministry to learn more about the proposed Committee on Ministries after each of the services this Sunday. We'll be at the table in the upstairs parlor or the book cart downstairs.

You are invited to the 2nd Saturday Adult Potluck Supper on February 11th Potluck Supper

Come at 6:00 to meet friends (old or new) for conversation and a good dinner. Please contact Adam Bortz at 864-3516 to let us know you are coming and whether you are bringing an appetizer, main dish, salad, or dessert. Also include how many people and if you need childcare (it's free, but we need a few days notice). We ask for a $2 per person donation to cover the costs of wine, cider, soft drinks, and supplies. I hope to see you there.

New UU Classes!

Another season is almost upon us and so too is the nest meeting of the New UU classes.  For those interesed in the who, what, why,and how's about the First Unitatian Universalist Society of Burlington youo are invited to attend and get the answers to these questions.  March 25th and April 1st from 6:00 to 8:00pm.  Child care is available upon request.

For those seeking to join the congregation these sessions are the first step toward membership.

If you are interested please contact Carol Schneider 518-761-4077 or cschneider2@roadrunner.com to let her know.

UU Book Discussion Group

Please join us on Feb 14th at 7:00 pm or Feb 21st at 1:00 pm as we discuss Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe.

Uncle Tom's Cabin, surprisingly a page turner, is the book that brought the cruelty of slavery into American homes. A reluctant publisher produced 5,000 first editions - they were gone in two days.  By the end of the year 300,000 copies were sold in America, then 200,000 in England.  This book's contribution to the abolition movement and its influence on Americn history is impossible to overstate.

The book for March will be The Tenth Parallel, by Eliza Griswold.

"Vermont Interfaith Action for UU"VIA
The Local Organizing Committee Meeting for 1st UU will be held February 15, 2012 between 7-8:30p.m. at the VIA Offices (ground floor of the Clark St. building) just behind our Meeting House.  We are interested in your ideas about how 1st UU can promote changes to improve social justice and the lives of people in our community, city, and state.  VIA has worked on affordable housing, improved transportation, health care, and state budget priorities, among other issues.

We are a "ground up" organization where we work to further goals of a consensus of the group.  Please let us know what you would like to change and improve in our city/state and join us on February 15th to discuss next steps.  For further information, please contact Nick Nixon at nixonwp@yahoo.com.

Minister's Monthly Forums!

Join Rev. Roberta this Sunday afternoon at 3 pm for the first of five monthly forums on the foundational ideas of liberal religion. You can be enlightened and still be home in time for the Super Bowl.

Based on an essay by James Luther Adams entitled The Five Smooth Stones of Liberalism, these monthly forums will focus on different aspects of our UU faith. The sessions will be lively participatory and will stand alone - you don't need to attend all five and can come into the series at any time. Learn a little UU history, theology, and ethics while applying these five concepts to your personal spiritual journey.  The schedule is:

February 5, 2012 -  Revelation Is Continuous

March 4, 2012 -   Just and Loving Community

April 1, 2012 -   An Attitude of Ultimate Optimism

May 6, 2012 -   Mutual and Free Consent

Migrant Justice Leaders at First UU

Leaders of Migrant Justice (until recently known as Vermont Migrant Farmworker Solidarity Project) will provide an update on Vermont programs and campaigns on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 12:30 PM in our meetinghouse. They will share ways to get involved in this important social justice issue of concern to Vermonters who depend upon migrant farmworkers to keep dairy farms operating.  Immigration is a central issue to UUs around the country as well. The current UUA Congregational Study/Action Issue (CSAI) is "Immigration as a Moral Issue," and our General Assembly this coming June in Phoenix is called the Justice GA. Refreshments will be served at the Migrant Justice forum on Feb. 12, and childcare will be available.

Volunteer Spot!

This week we're looking for some people to be our photographers!  If you are handy with a digital camera, please remember to bring it along when you attend a Society event.  Pick a few of your favorite pictures and email them to xina@uusociety.org so I can include them in future Enews Blasts and on the website!

A Word About Donating Stock.

In December, someone donated stock to the First UU Trust Fund most likely to pay their pledge.  Unfortunately, they did not contact Christina first and now we have no idea who's pledge to credit.  If you donated stock and have not yet received a thank you letter from the Society, please contact Christina at 802-862-5630 ext. 22 or xina@uusociety.org.  Please be prepared with the name of the stock, the number of shares and the date donated so that we may credit your pledge account.

For those of you who are interested, here some the instructions on how to pay your pledge with a stock donation. Donating Stock

Save the Date:

Saturday May 5th from 10 am - 12 noon the Interim Task Collaboration Team, Martha Dallas and Rev. Roberta invite you to take part in an Gathered Here, a denomination-wide exercise in appreciative inquiry. In this facilitated community wide conversation we will discover our common aspirations and unleash the power of our faith.
UUs across the continent will be participating in these conversations. The goal is to capture those meaningful moments, times of growth and positive developments in UU congregations or communities. We will reflect on how these positive experiences are relevant to our larger faith and how they might be applied to our collective future. Our input will help to shape a collective vision for the UUA and help professional and lay leaders shape the future of Unitarian Universalism.
Plus it will help us here in Burlington to focus on our unfolding future as we enter the search process for a new settled minister. Child care will be provided, and there will be a version of the program offered for youth and older children. Stay tuned for more detailed information about our program here in Burlington.
