"Death with Dignity" End of life issues challenge us on many levels.  The Vermont legislature is considering a "Death with Dignity" bill in the current session, which will be the topic of the January Social Action Forum.  Rev. Roberta's sermon will explore some of the emotional, ethical and spiritual challenges this bill raises.  The Care Network Ministry will be offering the opportunity to complete Advance Directives after each service.

**Thank you to Mike Reilly (friend of Mark Kuprych) for this amazing photo of our Meeting House!

Time to Bring Back Your "Guest" Box!

After placing coins and bills in your Guest at Your Table box during the holiday season to support the social justice work of UUSC, please return your box.  Bring it to either service this coming Sunday, Jan. 15.

If you prefer, an alternative to bringing back a box is sending a check made out to UUSC to: Guest at Your Table, UUSC, PO Box 808, Newark, NJ 07101-0808.  Or pick up a self-addressed envelope on a table in back of the sanctuary and in the parlor.  Another option is going to: www.uusc.org  to find out more, and make a membership donation online.  In either case, please be sure to include the name of our congregation, First UU Society of Burlington, when you respond.

If you bring back a "Guest" box, please include a check made out to "UUSC" inside for the amount of cash that you find.  Of course, rounding up your donation so that you qualify for a membership level is always welcome!

This year our FUUSB Denominational Affairs committee is striving to increase individual UUSC memberships from our congregation.  Your help is very much appreciated.  UUSC is an independent organization that depends on our membership donations to put Unitarian Universalist values into action.

Many thanks for your support.

Animal MinistryThank you everyone for your pet food donations! We have donated 159 lbs. of pet food as of 12/31/11 to the Food Shelf! Keep these donations coming. You can place your donations at the bottom of the stairwell that leads to RE.! Meow..meow..ruff ruff!!!

Our next meeting is 1/15/12 at 12:30. We will be providing some light vegetarian fare! Please come. We need you.

We also want to reach out to all RE teachers and offer to run a class (second service). We would make pet toys that will be donated to Lucy's House for the Prevention of Homeless Animals. This is a nonprofit organization that provides support to many elderly low income Vermonters by providing pet food delivery! Please contact Gail Beck at beckfamilyvt@gmail.com or call me at 802.862.3540.

We also have a number of other possible projects and  we could use more energy to accomplish. They Include:

·         Reaching out to UVM's animal rights group called SOAR.

·         Working with Green MT. Animal defenders and providing a vegetarian meal for the Emergency Food Shelf.

·         Sponsoring one of the Saturday Pot Luck dinners at the UU  with vegetarian dishes and animal rights discussions.

·         Giving input to the Blessing of the Animal service.

·         Organizing an "ethical eating" information event.

Please join us on 1/15/12 at 12:30 pm!

Feel free to contact Gail Beck at beckfamilyvt@gmail.com or 802.862.3540 with any questions. This is a committee that encourages all to participate. We have kids, teens and adults involved! Come as a family!

LAST OPPORTUNITY TO HELP FEED THE HUNGRY

This will be the last weekend in January the UU Society of Burlington will be serving at the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.  We have only 2 casseroles promised for this coming Sunday, 15th!  If you are willing and able, please consider making a protein rich casserole or dessert.  Warm, belly-filling meals are needed!  You may drop-off a meal at the Food Shelf before 5:30pm this Sunday or leave it in the downstairs refrigerator at church marked 'Food Shelf'.   Please email Donna at herbivorecake@hotmail.com if you are providing a casserole donation!

Thank you!!

Social Action Forum:  Sunday, January 15th at 12:30 p.m.

My Life, My Choice at the End of My Life

On Sunday following the second service the Social Action Committee will hold an important forum considering patient choices at the end of life.  A decision will be called for this year when Death with Dignity will be presented for a legislative vote.  How do you feel about this important issue?  Do you want to have some control at the end of your life? Come and see an important film "The Last Campaign of Governor Booth Gardner" and join in a discussion with Amy Schollenberg from Patient Choices VT.

Getting the Word Out!

We've had so many changes this year in how we get the word out about events happening at the First UU Society.  Are you confused?  Do you need some help?

Click here to link to the Publications page of our website.

If you specifically want information on how to get your event listed in the EnewsBlast, here it is!

Enews Blast

Our Enews Blast is a weekly publication containing short articles, flyers or links to longer articles. The Enews Blast contains only items directly related to Society sponsored events - it will not contain announcements of outside events. You may submit pictures to be published along with your article. If you do not submit a picture, one will most likely be chosen by the editor to accompany your article.

To eliminate repeat articles in the Enews Blast, you will be allowed one article per event. Any other repeats will be published in the "Mark Your Calendar" section of the Enews Blast with a link to your article.

The deadline for submitting items to the Enews Blast is every Thursday at noon. You may submit items for the Enews Blast by sending them to Enewsblast@uusociety.org. Any deviation from this schedule will be announced well in advance.
