Do you have a candlestick or candle that is precious to you? A vase for flowers? Do you bake bread or make wine? If so, we would like you to participate in our ritual "Setting the Table" Thanksgiving service on Sunday November 20th. If you and your family would like to participate get in touch with either Rev. Roberta or Martha Dallas.

JUMP JUMP Bags are Coming!

At the church service on November 6, the JUMP Thanksgiving bags will be available for members of the UU congregation to take home and fill.  Once you have filled your bags, they should be returned to church at the November 20 service.

We need help transporting all of the filled JUMP bags to the First Congregational Church (home of JUMP) on Tuesday, November 22 at 11:30.  It is one of those jobs for which literally "many hands make light work".  If you have an hour and a half to spare on that day, please contact Ellen Wollensack at 864-5523 or ewollen@burlingtontelecom.net.

The Joint Urban Ministry Project (JUMP) is an interfaith nonprofit founded in 1988 and is currently supported by 27 congregations in Chittenden County. FUUSB is a supporting congregation that supplies volunteers for the daily operations of the drop-in center where clients receive financial assistance with basic needs (such as food, transportation, laundry, identification, medication, and utilities); take-away items (food, toiletries, household necessities, and diapers); and compassionate listening with individualized referrals. JUMP also assists with used clothing and household goods, Opportunities Credit Union membership, and smoking cessation program fees.  FUUSB member, Jean Palmer, is one of the two paid, part-time staff members working at JUMP.

Fresh Sundays!

The Religious Education Committee is excited to announce the first of two Fresh Sundays in which the young people in FUUSB's RE program will gather together to work on projects related to our congregation's social missions.  On November 6, children and teens will be working with the Social Action Committee on hunger issues, learning about how families make decisions about food, and how we can help address hunger in our community through our gathering items for JUMP and other projects.  Can we ask you to help?  Please email Cheryl Herrick at herrickvt@gmail.com if you're interested in helping young UU's make soup mixes for JUMP, or have a field trip to City Market, or learn about how to create a healthy breakfast and why some families don't.  We look forward to gathering together to learn and to help!

gustavoVermont's Emerging Human Rights Issue: Migrant Farm Workers

Joseph Gainza of Vermont Action for Peace and Gustavo Teran, long-time social justice activist, will lead a forum on immigration issues in Vermont on
Sunday, Nov. 13 at 12:30 PM in the Susan B. Anthony Room.  Sponsored by the Denominational Affairs Committee and several other committees, Joseph and Gustavo will help us address the current UUA Congregational Study/Action Issue (CSAI) of "Immigration as a Moral Issue" from a Vermont perspective.

Joseph will provide an overview of the present immigration situation and Gustavo will show a short film, "Silenced Voices," that he and a colleague produced.  Nearly a third of Vermont's 1500 migrant farm workers come from the Mexican state of Chiapas where Gustavo, Brendan O'Neill and a filmmaker traveled after a young farm worker died on a Vermont farm.  The film looks at the life of Jose Obeth Santiz Cruz and the lives of other workers who have come to Vermont from the village where Jose lived.  Gustavo will share with us what he learned while in Mexico.

You are warmly invited to meet and hear Joseph Gainza and Gustavo Teran on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 12:30 PM in the Meeting House.  Refreshments will be served.  For more information, please contact Dave Conrad, chair of Denominational Affairs, at dconrad@uvm.edu or 658-1047

October 21, 2011

Dear Members of the Unitarian Church in Burlington,

We are most grateful that you have made your church available for a free public talk we are sponsoring on Sunday, October 30, at 4 p.m.

And we extend a warm welcome to each of you, your friends, and families to attend what we anticipate will be an inspiring and thought-provoking talk.

Our speaker is John Q. Adams of New York.  He's a Christian Science practitioner and teacher, and the title of his talk is: "If God is All, where is He at this moment?"  It's a question many of us have probably asked ourselves in times of challenge.

Mr. Adams draws on his experience as a healer, including his own overcoming of drug addiction, in discussing God's ever-present help.

Additional information about Christian Science and this talk can be found at www.christianscience.com and on our local church's website, www.christianscienceburlington.org.

This lecture is one of our church's many forms of outreach.  Our goal is to present facts about our religion (we know there are some misconceptions out there) and to promote a mutual sharing of ideas.

Mr. Adams would love to meet you on October 30th - and so would we!

Warmly,

The Members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Burlington

ghost walk

UU Ghost Walk

Which of our founders made a fortune in railroads and died a pauper?

Which family paid the bills for our first meetinghouse and numerous musical instruments? Where is our first minister and why is his wife's grave unmarked? What prominent Unitarian took Ira Allen's land by a legal technicality?

To meet our beloved UU ghosts, good and bad, please join Elz Curtiss for a walking tour of Elmwood Cemetery after second service on October 30th. We will use the smoothest paths we can find, so all ages and mobilities are welcome.

Rain date will be the following Sunday.

For info please call Elz at 863-8403.
