Hello Knitters and Crocheters!
The UU crafting group has a project we need your help with! With winter approaching, we are aware of the need to keep WARM -- and two opportunities have arisen to help local people stay warm. We want to make warm afghans for residents of several homeless shelters in Burlington AND we want to knit a stash of wool socks for the homeless folks who continue to live outside, in tents, during the winter (yes, there are many). These folks come to JUMP and are often looking for really warm boot socks.
Two opportunities!
If you are a sock knitter, please make boot socks out of worsted weight wool in women's large and men's medium and large sizes. Regular wool or washable is fine -- just make a label so the new owner knows how to wash them. Deliver socks to FUUSB or JUMP for staff to give out at JUMP. If you'd like to learn to knit socks, come to the crafting group and we'll teach you!
Or you can knit/crochet a 7" wide afghan strip that is 65" long. Use washable wool -- in a BULKY WEIGHT, for warmth. Use any stitch you want -- fancy or plain, just not lacy -- we're looking for sturdy fabrics!
We'd love to have you join us on the 1st or 3rd Wednesday of each month at FUUSB from 6:30 - 8:30 so we can craft together.
Please contact Jean Palmer with questions or if you plan to help out. 288-9566 or

Havest The Power
Here's a reminder that coming soon is the leadership class called Harvest the Power. One goal of the workshop is to create a common language to create a vision as we move to defining ourselves to find a new minister. Another goal is to learn strategic thinking to lead us to where we want to go, and help us dream where we could go, to help us meet our mission to inspire spiritual growth, care for each other and our community, seek truth, and act for justice. The further goal is to help you get some tools to become more of a leader in life and on our congregation. So come stretch a little, come for a couple weekends of fun and positive thinking. November 4 evening, and November 5, 9-3 then two weeks later on November 19. Contact Chip Patullo sunergy@burlingtontelecom.net or 660-8903 for more information and Jean Palmer jeanpa813@gmail.com to register. |

Do You Enjoy Eating?
Do we have your attention now? JUMP's delicious fundraiser, "The Best JUMP Supper Ever," will be held on Saturday, November 5, at First United Methodist Church, South Winooski at Buell St., Burlington, with seatings at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. All of JUMP's supporting faith communities are invited to provide their favorite foods, so it's like going to 27 church suppers all in one! How can you resist? Tickets will be available from First UU's JUMP representatives on Sunday, October 23 and 30, after each service, or by calling Woody Fulton at 399-2643. If you cannot attend, consider buying some tickets to donate to JUMP clients. Many came last year and really enjoyed the food, music and community conversation.

Vermont's Emerging Human Rights Issue: Migrant Farm Workers
Joseph Gainza of Vermont Action for Peace and Gustavo Teran, long-time social justice activist, will lead a forum on immigration issues in Vermont on
Sunday, Nov. 13 at 12:30 PM in the Susan B. Anthony Room. Sponsored by the Denominational Affairs Committee and several other committees, Joseph and Gustavo will help us address the current UUA Congregational Study/Action Issue (CSAI) of "Immigration as a Moral Issue" from a Vermont perspective.
Joseph will provide an overview of the present immigration situation and Gustavo will show a short film, "Silenced Voices," that he and a colleague produced. Nearly a third of Vermont's 1500 migrant farm workers come from the Mexican state of Chiapas where Gustavo, Brendan O'Neill and a filmmaker traveled after a young farm worker died on a Vermont farm. The film looks at the life of Jose Obeth Santiz Cruz and the lives of other workers who have come to Vermont from the village where Jose lived. Gustavo will share with us what he learned while in Mexico.
You are warmly invited to meet and hear Joseph Gainza and Gustavo Teran on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 12:30 PM in the Meeting House. Refreshments will be served. For more information, please contact Dave Conrad, chair of Denominational Affairs, at dconrad@uvm.edu or 658-1047. |
Take Action!
On October 16th, Rosanne Greco led the Social Action Forum in a discussion on Green Sanctuary and the tar sands issue. In working towards becoming a UUA Green Sanctuary, we recognize that environmental crises may be the greatest moral challenge we face, requiring faith not fear, perseverance not ambivalence. In that light, we urge each of you to take action to stop the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline! Time is running out, and President Obama will make his decision soon. Learn more: http://www.tarsandsaction.org/rise-stop-keystone-xl/
Take action: * Call the White House and ask them NOT to issue a Presidential Permit to allow the Keystone XL Tar sands pipeline White House: (202) 456-1111 * Join the Sunday Nov 6th protest at the White House (no arrests this time!) * Sign any and every petition you can find! * Withhold campaign contributions and volunteer time for the 2012 campaign. Contact Maeve McBride for more info. maeve@ecoseeds.org

Volunteer Opportunities!!!
Needed: People who Like To Play!
Greetings from the REC! We are looking for a few good, non-teachers to play downstairs for our first "vacation Sunday" RE session on November 27th. It is a special treat for our kids to see a few adults let down their guard and spend some time making paper airplanes, coloring, playing board games, or otherwise acting like a kid. We need 2 adults, along with Martha Dallas, to participate with 15-18 kids. Why not take a break from the adult world and join the fun in the basement?
Help Out with our JUMP and Food Shelf Donations!
Are you and your family looking for a stewardship opportunity that you can do together? Here is just the thing...We need a person or family to bring the JUMP and food shelf donations to their respective sites in Burlington once per month. This job must be done during business hours during the week. I will train you...It's really easy! Contact Ellen Wollensack at ewollen@burlingtontelecom.net or 864-5523. Thank you!

UU Ghost Walk
Which of our founders made a fortune in railroads and died a pauper?
Which family paid the bills for our first meetinghouse and numerous musical instruments? Where is our first minister and why is his wife's grave unmarked? What prominent Unitarian took Ira Allen's land by a legal technicality? To meet our beloved UU ghosts, good and bad, please join Elz Curtiss for a walking tour of Elmwood Cemetery after second service on October 30th. We will use the smoothest paths we can find, so all ages and mobilities are welcome.
Rain date will be the following Sunday.
For info please call Elz at 863-8403.
