Giving Thanks - A Message from FIMRC's CEO
|
|
As the month of giving thanks comes to a close, I would like to take a moment to thank each of you for your involvement in FIMRC programs, past and present. The amount of support and enthusiasm that I feel, both in the United States and abroad, is contagious. I am humbled each time I hear about the excellent work that Chapters are executing across the US, whether it be through awareness campaigns, fundraising efforts or organizing volunteer trips, to name a few. I am also constantly amazed at the amount of work that is executed on-site by eager Global Health Volunteers that come from a wide range of backgrounds and skill sets. Every time a FIMRC team member joins a conference call late night or early morning to ensure they are present during the day in the communities where we work, I am thankful for their dedication to the patients who benefit from our services.
During the holiday season, I find it necessary to take a moment to step back and give thanks for all of the hard work and dedication that goes into promoting FIMRC's mission and serving communities across the globe. Your enthusiasm, dedication and support are truly inspiring and appreciated, not only during the holiday season, but each day of the year!
Happy Holidays, Meredith Mick

Project Limón Spotlighted at Catholic University of America
|
|
On November 7, FIMRC CEO Meredith Mick and Director of Volunteer Programs and Global Operations Anna DiColli had the pleasure of discussing Project Limón with students enrolled in Catholic University of America's "Spanish for Health Care" Certificate Program.
"It was wonderful discussing with them how various environmental, economic, and infrastructural factors impact the healthcare available in Limón and Las Salinas," Anna shared. "I especially enjoyed learning about the students' previous international experiences - the certificate program has a strong base in global awareness, and definitely encourages involvement abroad."
A group of students from the certificate program will be traveling to Project Limón in March for an alternative spring break experience. FIMRC is very excited to welcome them to Nicaragua in early 2012!

FIMRC's Micro Health Insurance Program Receives Valuable Educational Tool Donation from Emory University
|
FIMRC would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Emory University Director of Academic Technologies Alan Cattier for generously donating a Personal Response System (PRS) to Project Las Delicias' Micro Health Insurance Program (MHIP). Mr. Cattier graciously extended a helping hand and made the donation possible within a few days of being contacted. On behalf of Emory University, he was able to provide FIMRC with an entire PRS travel kit--including 35 PRS remotes and 2 USB receivers.
Current Project Las Delicias Ambassador and FIMRC Social Media Coordinator Maithri Vangala contacted Mr. Cattier in November about procuring this educational technology that has wonderful potential for the way that health education sessions are run within the MHIP. With the PRS, health education sessions (which are at the heart of many of our preventative health programs) instantly become more interactive and monitoring and evaluation of crucial information from each health education session would be infinitely easier.
Special thanks also goes to Georgia Tech Electrical Engineering Masters Student Santiago Hässig for providing the initial idea to use such a tool and for helping with the procurement of the donation, and to FIMRC's Georgia Tech Chapter Co-Presidents Joseph Kim and Carson Swanson for helping with the pick-up and logistics of transporting the donation to El Salvador itself. This really has been a team effort, as most fruitful things are. If you're interested in this idea or would simply like to know more about how the PRS will be used, please feel free to contact Maithri Vangala: maithri.vangala@fimrc.org |
