Project Las Delicias - Reconnecting with Old Friends

June 6, 2009 marked the day I left El Salvador after a four-year stint with the Peace Corps.  Last month I had the privilege of returning to what I consider my segunda patria as a member of the FIMRC family.  With the members of Team El Salvador as my guides - Alex, Angela, Brian, Eduardo, Ítalo and Morena - I set sail on a two-week tour of what makes Project Las Delicias so special, a comprehensive community outreach program and accessible healthcare, both acute and preventative.

Global Health Volunteers from Georgia Tech, Purdue, Roger Williams, and UIUC accompanied me during my time on site.  Alex & Co. organized a wide variety of activities and the students tackled them with courage and grace.  Highlights include tracking height and weight of hundreds of children, administering vaccinations, dressing wounds, conducting pre & postnatal exams, glucose and blood pressure testing, leading health discussions, and observing the clinic doctor, Eduardo.

Morena's words of gratitude to the Global Health Volunteers describe it best, "Each and every one of you have left a mark here in Las Delicias and the community is grateful for your service."  For those of you who know Morena, she is just as much of a rock star as she was when I met her two short years ago.

Team El Salvador, thank you for being such gracious hosts.  It was a memorable "homecoming."  And to avail ourselves of the famous saying, a picture is worth a 1,000 words, I will let the images below take over from here.

Getting Involved at the High School Level

Cameron Geehr and Lauren Bartolic lead by example at Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, CA.  Cameron and Lauren are the founding members of a FIMRC chapter at their school and have wasted no time in making an impact on the underserved communities FIMRC supports in India.  Over 6,700 high protein meal packs will be sent to the crèches of Kodaikanal thanks to Cameron and Lauren's efforts.  FIMRC would like to thank Cameron and Lauren for their advocacy and LifeScript for the support through their donations.

FIMRC Team Member Highlight - Richard Kimanayi

Richard has been a key member of the Project Bumwalukani team since early 2010.  What began as part-time support as Assistant Health Outreach Coordinator (AHOC) is now a full-time commitment.  Coordinating the supplemental trainings and managing the monitoring and evaluation for the Community Health Educators (CHEs) program are a couple of vital roles Richard plays.  It is thanks to Richard's leadership that allows FIMRC's community outreach imprint to be as large as it is.  Keep up the great work, Richard!

From the Desk of the Director of Volunteer Programs
brought to you by Anna DiColli

Be ready to volunteer globally in less time than your favorite TV show!

Did you know that the required materials to complete your enrollment involve a set of eight forms and your payment?  The set of forms takes about 35-40 minutes maximum to complete, and payments can be made easily through a mailed check.  Thus, you can be ready to embark on the experience of a lifetime in less than one hour! (That's less than an episode of Top Chef, one of my personal favorites!)

If you have a topic you would like to see addressed in From the Desk of the Director of Volunteer Programs, please email your interest to missions@fimrc.org with "Desk of DoVP" in the subject line!  Anna DiColli will select two topics to discuss in each newsletter and looks forward to seeing your submissions!
