FIMRC Newsletter - December 2010
Dear FIMRC Friends & Family,

As we approach the end of another fruitful year, the foundation is reminded of how vital your support is to keep our dream alive.  It's truly inspirational to have a network of such generous and kindhearted people.  This month's newsletter has been put together to commemorate everyone's efforts, both large and small, near and far.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Gratefully,
Team FIMRC

Meet Project Alto Vera's Trailblazer, Nora Maresh

Four years ago, during her service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Paraguay, Nora Maresh dreamed up the idea of providing a community member the gift of higher education.  Nora's vision transformed into FIMRC's Project Alto Vera and Ignacio Cristaldo is a year away from graduation.

Project Alto Vera supports all costs associated with Ignacio 's five-year program at the Universidad del Pacífico in Asunción, Paraguay.  It is thanks in large part to Nora's consistent generosity and that of those she reaches out to year after year that has allowed Ignacio to pursue his aspiration of attaining a university degree.

*The following excerpts were taken from a recent interview with Nora and FIMRC team member John Bova.

When did you first get involved in supporting Project Alto Vera?

I first got involved in supporting Project Alto Vera when I identified the need for Ignacio Cristaldo to attend university. He was my community contact while I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in rural Paraguay, and I had never been so convinced that this motivated young man would greatly benefit from higher education.  Unfortunately, a local or national scholarship was not available.  I then contacted FIMRC to see if they would be willing to support me in the efforts to launch Project Alto Vera and they agreed.

Ignacio has now completed four of his five years of university study and we are in the middle of a fundraising campaign for year 5.  Our wonderful donors have been crucial for this project to be a success.

Has supporting Project Alto Vera led you down other paths (professional/personal) that you might not have otherwise discovered?

I have been working in international health and development for about 7 years, and while my involvement in Project Alto Vera has not changed my professional path, it has proven to me that education is an extremely effective form of development.  Education has the power to change the trajectory of someone's life.  On a personal level, I have been pleased with the support Ignacio has received from the donors who have supported a successful fundraising campaign for the last 4 years. We only have one more to go!  I encourage everyone to check out FIMRC's webpage to read more about Project Alto Vera and how you can support!

What fundraising approaches do you find to be successful?

I find making direct, personal requests to people with a connection to the project has the best way to raise support.  No one likes receiving a form letter!  I have also used the FIMRC website and social media outlets such as Facebook to publicize the fundraising campaign.  Also, and for me most graciously, a church in Alabama has supported the Project and has donated money from their Thanksgiving Day offering.

FIMRC would like to thank Nora for being a rock in the fundraising efforts for Project Alto Vera.  If you would like to join her in this cause, click here for further information.

Our Community Health Educators Receive Holiday Cheer
CHE of the Month - Richard
CHE of the Month Richard Kimanayi

In just two short weeks of exposure on the FIMRC website, two generous donors have sponsored Project Bumwalukani's Community Health Educators (CHEs).  To provide some background, CHEs are a dedicated group of volunteers who work tirelessly to serve community members as front-line healthcare providers, educators, and supporters.  Their impact is felt throughout the villages, at the clinic, and within the lives of many individuals.  The success of Project Bumwalukani is due chiefly to the work of these amazing people!

This Year's Marine Corps Marathon Participants Set A New Record
2010 Finish for Kids charity runners pulled in a considerable amount of support at this year's race, $15,204 to be exact!  It was the most successful fund raiser of the year.  Strides will be made for next year's event to ensure all runners are happy, healthy, and successful in meeting their goal on race day.  A huge thanks goes out to all 50 participants.  Anyone interested in running in 2011 can contact the Finish for Kids race coordinator at marathon@fimrc.org.

İMil Gracias, Judith!

FIMRC is losing one of its most inspirational team members at the end of December, Field Operations Manager for Project Peru, Judith Friedman.  Judith has managed the three-pronged project for the entire duration of 2010 with class and grace.

Judith's work has resulted in a number of legacy projects.  One that recently made local news in Trujillo is Viviendas Saludables, which aims to improve baseline health through positive behavioral

changes in rural homes.  An itegral component of this project is Madres Líderes, an initiative that instructs mothers on how to adapt healthier habits, that once established, are shared with other community members.  Additionally, the formalization of partnerships with all aspects of Project Peru have come from the tireless hands of Judith.  Other noteworthy accomplishments include advancements on the mobile clinic operational plan and Inglés para Salud, an interactive English language acquisition program that incorporates health topics into the curriculum, designed in conjunction with FIMRC Ambassador, Susan Ondak.

Thank you, Judith.  You have created a new gold standard for Project Peru and all of FIMRC's global operations.  As the saying goes, this isn't adios, but rather, hasta pronto!

Elena Phoutrides Closes One Chapter And Opens Another
Project Bumwalukani has enjoyed the leadership and community development acumen of Elena Phoutrides since the summer months of 2009 (see her profile highlighted in the September newsletter and online impact with the Community Health Educators Program).  In 2011, Elena has set her sights on becoming a Fulbright Scholar to continue her research in the Maternal-Child Health arena, one in which she is well versed.  During her stint in Uganda, Elena has consulted with top neonatal health intervention experts in Uganda, put East Africa on the map, and spoke with top health officials in South Africa.

Luckily for FIMRC, the work laid out in Elena's Fulbright proposal would be conducted in the eastern district of Bududa, home to Project Bumwalukani.  Our fingers are crossed that the Fulbright Committee awards Elena the opportunity to devote endless passion toward a her life's calling.  Until that decision is reached, good luck and thank you for bringing FIMRC along for the ride!
