Thirteen became a lucky number for David Holmes, a 12th grader at Baton Rouge Magnet High School, on February 14 as the Louisiana Department of Education reported he now is eligible for the 2011 Louisiana State Students of the Year competition for high schoolers. Out of 13 total candidates, including him, Holmes was selected as the Region 2 High School Student of the Year winner, according to state Program Consultant Linda Champion. |

Most of EBRPSS Semifinalists for National Merit and National Achievement Scholarships Have Achieved Finalist Status
Fourteen of the 15 East Baton Rouge Parish School System's (EBRPSS) students who made Semifinalist status in the fall of 2010 for the National Merit Scholarship Program competition are now Finalists. In addition, all but one of the district's five Semifinalists for the National Achievement Scholarship Program, also run by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), are Finalists for that award.

Students Continue to Receive Free Dental Care Under the Give Kids A Smile Program
After a bout of bad weather the previous week, the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) helped kick-off the district-wide Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) program on Friday, February 11, with support from community organizations.

| C-SPAN Bus and Crew Roll Through Baton Rouge, Stops at Scotlandville Magnet High School

Students and teachers at Scotlandville Magnet High School - along with one elected official -- were treated to a taste of Washington, D.C., politics and public affairs programming on February 9 as the C-SPAN Digital Bus rolled into Baton Rouge as part of its "Washington: Your Way" national tour. The visit was sponsored by Cox Communications.

| Belfair Elementary School Student 'Shirts' the Issue of Becoming an Entrepreneur with Unique T-Shirt Design Business
There's a third grader at Belfair Elementary School who seems like any other student enrolled there. But beneath his maroon school uniform shirt, he hides something that makes him extraordinary. It's a T-shirt featuring his own unique graphic design as part of his Kyler D Company.

| Students Take a Trip Around the World with High-Tech Equipment During Camp EdVenture
Third and fourth graders in year-round school at Claiborne Upper Elementary School were issued visas and traveled around the world - all from the comfort of a high-tech classroom. It's part of the East Baton Rouge Parish School System Professional Development/ Instructional Technology Department's EdVenture for students. It is the second time the department has held the program in the last year.

Woodlawn High Student Wins FFA Speech Contest
Daisy Nsibu, an 11th grader and president of the Woodlawn High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter, has won the 2011 Area IV FFA Gulf of Mexico Speaking Career Development Event (CDE). Nsibu's speech, "Barrier Islands and Their Role in Coastal Protection," focused on the threats facing Louisiana's barrier islands and offered potential solutions to save these vital elements of our coastal region.
42 Middle, High School Counselors and Graduation Coaches/Facilitators Complete National Certification Forty-two middle and high school counselors and graduation
coaches/facilitators represented the East Baton Rouge Parish School System January 24-25 at the Career Pathways Leadership Conference at Dutchtown High School in Geismar, La. By doing so, they completed their national Career Pathways Leadership certification.
PRAL-BR Inducts Trahan, Gordon as Officers On January 25, the Public Relations Association of Louisiana's Baton Rouge Chapter (PRAL-BR) inducted East Baton Rouge Parish School System's director of Communications & Community Engagement, Chris Trahan, and its public information officer, Sonya T. Gordon, APR, as 2011 officers and members of PRAL-BR's Board of Directors.

'Faith in Action' the Subject of VIPS Open House at Capitol Elementary School The Volunteers In Public Schools (VIPS) We Believe In Children Council hosted a "Faith Communities in Action" Open House Wednesday, February 9, at Capitol Elementary School. The Open House allowed representatives of Baton Rouge faith groups an opportunity to witness how three diverse congregations have united to support Capitol Elementary. The We Believe In Children Council facilitates effective partnerships with East Baton Rouge Parish School System sites that support academic success.
