5,000-Plus Parents, Students Interested in Innovative and Specialized Programs Visited Cortana Mall School Booths During EBR Mania Oct. 23
More than 5,000 people turned out at Cortana Mall Saturday, October 23, to visit booths, get information and sign up for programs during EBR Mania, the East Baton Rouge Parish School System's (EBRPSS) expo for Innovative and Specialized Programs. Parents and students picked up applications for the district's 14 Magnet schools, as well as for Gifted & Talented programs. School and programs representatives were on hand to answer questions and hand out packets. For instance, Principal Susan Kornuta (center) helped man the Woodlawn Elementary School booth with teachers Kelly Stuckey (left) and Anna Catherine Ferguson. |
| Thousands of Middle School Students Participate in Capital One/Junior Achievement Finance Park
They may only be in middle school, but for at least one day recently area students made "real world" decisions as part of pseudo families that had a budget, bills, expenses and other responsibilities. As of October 22, 2,175 students had received curriculum and 1,737 students had attended the one-day Capital One/Junior Achievement Finance Park at Cortana Mall. And many more experienced the program before the doors closed at the end of October.

| Funky Pelicans in Original BRCVPA Student Opera Focus on Oil Spill; Production Benefits Restoring the Louisiana Coast

In an original opera written, designed, directed and acted out by fourth-grade students at the Baton Rouge Center for Visual and Performing Arts (BRCVPA), characters on a local beach encounter the oil spill and begin to wonder what it would be like to be a pelican dealing with oil-related problems. During the production, held in late October at the school, they soon become stranded pelicans who are treated by rehabilitation workers. When they snap back into reality, they discuss the experience and how the oil is still lurking under the beautiful water. Their solution: collecting pennies for pelicans. |

LSU Athletes Make Waves, Turn Summersaults for Students
Although they usually are busy attending classes, studying, practicing and competing, many Louisiana State University (LSU) athletes have found a little time to give back to the community, too -- by reading with students. Members of the LSU Swim & Diving, Gymnastics, Track & Field, Volleyball and Women's Golf teams have signed on to volunteer as Reading Friends through Volunteers In Public Schools (VIPS) EveryBody Reads program.
