According to 2010 District Performance Score (DPS) results released by the Louisiana State Department of Education Thursday, October 7, the East Baton Rouge Parish School System (EBRPSS) continues to show a strong and steady increase in its average DPS over the last five years. State data released show an overall growth for EBRPSS of 2.2 points, which indicates an improvement from the 2009 DPS of 79.8 to 82.0 this year. Because of this increase, the School System is now labeled a 2-Star School System. It had a 1-Star label since the 1998-1999 school year, when district rankings were first introduced by the state. A school system must score above 80 points in order to achieve the 2-Star ranking.

The U.S. Department of Education recently released a video highlighting the arts and music program at Forest Heights Academy of Excellence elementary school. The video highlights the schools ability to combine the art of learning with the learning of art.

Produced by the History Channel, the video is posted on the U.S. Department of Education's ED Blog on the department's Web site:  "An Education Masterpiece in Baton Rouge" at http://www.ed.gov/blog/2010/10/an-education-masterpiece-in-baton-rouge/.  (To see where the video is featured on the national department's home page, go to www.ed.gov and look for the blog on the left-hand side of the page.)

Istrouma High's Future Food Service Workers Prepare Tastings for Epicurean Society's Whole Foods Fund-Raising Event

IHS Whole FoodsIstrouma High School's Louisiana ProStart students put on their chef hats and aprons September 22 and served up appetizers for a worthy cause at Whole Foods in Towne Centre.  The tasty mini-dishes cooked up by students like (left to right) 11th graders Charitty James and Dominque McGruder enticed shoppers to buy even more, thus contribute even more, to the Baton Rouge Epicurean Society (BRES) on Whole Foods Community Giving Day.  The store donated 5 percent of total purchases that day to BRES, which is a big supporter of the ProStart educational program.
