Research Comes Alive at Grandview!
Grandview has been invited to participate in a research project about the long term effects of Botulinum Toxin (Botox®) for Children with Cerebral Palsy. Through research and clinical experience, we already know that Botox® improves spasticity, helps tight muscles grow better and gives an opportunity for the child to strengthen opposing muscles. It certainly seems like giving a child Botox® injections into tight leg and arm muscles at young age helps them with long term mobility goals like speed of walking and how much they use a walker, however this has not actually been proven with research. This is a key question for the staff at Grandview to know the answer to, to ensure that we are providing the best care to all children with Cerebral Palsy.
The Centre is currently participating in a study entitled, "Long Term Effectiveness of Botulinum Toxin." The study is being conducted at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and Sick Kids. Read More

The Power of One
At Grandview Children's Centre, we take great pride in our most valuable asset, our staff. Our talented staff work hard every day to make Grandview a warm and welcoming place where the needs of children and their families can be met with dignity and respect. Winnie Wong, a Physiotherapist at the Centre, recently received Grandview's Power of One Award at our Annual General Meeting on June 17, 2010.
As hilarious as this sounds, Winnie began her rehabilitation interest with growing corn! She has always enjoyed working with kids, from babysitting them in her younger years to running summer day camps.
Winnie graduated from the Physiotherapy program at UBC in 2002. She first worked in Vancouver, and then moved to Ontario in the fall of 2002. At Grandview Children's Centre, she has been the Adolescent Program Physiotherapist for almost 7 years. "It is a rewarding challenge to be a part of the supportive and enthusiastic team for the teens and their caregivers," said Winnie. Winnie's clients describe her as 'passionate'. One even commented that, "Just when things get easier, she makes it harder!" It is with this attitude that Winnie motivates her clients to be as independent as possible, and to live a healthy active life. Her other important role at the Centre is organizing the Orthopedic Clinic. In her spare time, Winnie gets her adrenaline rush from running, rock climbing and downhill skiing.

Grandview Receives Accessibility Award at the 2010 EmployABILITY Awards Gala
Barb Olsen, Vice Chair, Board of Trustees and Vicky Earle, Executive Director Grandview Children's Centre, attended the Durham Region Employment Network 2010 EmployABILITY Awards Gala on Tuesday June 1, 2010. Grandview Children's Centre was presented with an Accessibility Award as a result of a nomination by the City of Oshawa Accessibility Committee. A newcomer to Durham noted the warm friendly and supportive welcome she and her daughter received at Grandview. "It is daunting to relocate with a child who has special needs, and parents who need support," she commented. "But Grandview staff made the transition considerably less difficult thanks to the wonderful staff's initial reception and follow-up care." |

Grandview's Preschool Outreach Program, Remember It's Never too Early!
Grandview would like to remind child care providers that through the Preschool Outreach Program, consultation from a Speech-Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, and Audiologist is available to address concerns you may have in regards to a child attending a licenced preschool or daycare program. Click here to download a copy of our program brochure.
We recognize and support early intervention as of key importance in the development of preschool children. So, as we head into the fall with children starting at preschool, we encourage child care providers to refer younger children to the infant and toddler programs. Strategies to assist a very young child in their development can be provided to the teachers.Click here to contact us. |
