Riders of the Month

team sogaFor more than a decade, Special Olympics Georgia has had a team of resilient athletes and coaches participate in BRAG each year - known as Team SOGA - showing other cyclists and the world that they, too, can meet the grueling challenge of riding across Georgia in one week. It takes one tough individual to ride a bicycle all the way from Atlanta to Savannah in June, but once again, Special Olympics Georgia athletes Bill Greene, Nigel Napper, Troy Singleton, Bill Williams and Gary Blodgett met that challenge.
Once again led by coaches Dan Evatt (Dij) and Lee Tidmore, Team SOGA made the ride starting in Atlanta on June 5th and riding each day until they reached their destination of Savannah on June 11th - more than 397 miles. If you have ridden on BRAG, you probably know each member of Team SOGA.  They all have ridden for multiple years except for Gary Blodgett - this was his first year riding on BRAG with his dad, Donald. The athletes of Team SOGA are from Dekalb and Bibb County and participate in several sports for Special Olympics Georgia, including cycling held in October at the State Fall Games. However, BRAG is truly a unique adventure that they enjoy year after year. Bonding with other cyclists, forming lasting relationships, and showing others just what strength they have as they ride for over 60 miles a day is indeed unforgettable.

Special Olympics Georgia 's mission is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. BRAG is just one of the many sports opportunities that Special Olympics Georgia's 23,620 athletes are able to enjoy each year.

You can support Team SOGA on BRAG by sending a check to BRAG or directly to Special Olympics Georgia, 4000 DeKalb Tech Parkway, Suite 400, Building 400, Atlanta, GA  30340.
