BRAG WinterRide 2011
St. Marys WinterRide
(Ride/Hike/Boat Adventure)
February 22 - 27, 2011
BRAG's second WinterRide will start in beautiful St. Marys, Georgia. The dates are Tuesday, February 22, 2011, through Sunday, February 27, 2011. The average high temperature this week in St. Marys is 65ºF. St. Marys is 350 miles from Atlanta and takes about 5 hours to drive. This would make a great Valentine's Day present for the sweetie cyclist in your life. Non-riders are welcomed also. Tuesday, Feb. 22 - Arrive early enough at St. Marys and bike 3 miles to the St. Marys Submarine Museum and the Cumberland Island Museum in downtown St. Marys. Bring a bottle or two of your favorite wines for our nightly wine tasting / happy hour. Optional dinner together at a local restaurant.
Wednesday, Feb. 23 - Ride the 33-mile St. Marys Loop Ride, led by local cyclists. Visit the oldest church in Georgia, a War of 1812 site, the U.S. Navy Submarine Base, including the USS Bancroft Memorial, the Sugar Mill tabby ruins, and Crooked River State Park. Thursday, Feb. 24 - We will take the ferry to Cumberland Island. Bike (you can rent one on the island) or just walk the 5-mile recommended leisurely hike on the island. Either way, Cumberland Island is one of the most beautiful places on earth and is a photographer's paradise. February is the time to see it, without the heat and the bugs. Friday, Feb. 25 - Ride your bike to downtown St. Marys. Then take the ferry to Fernandina, FL. We will have optional lunch at the Gourmet Gourmet restaurant, then head out to visit Ft. Clinch. After Ft. Clinch, we will bike to the Atlantic Ocean for a beachfront snack. Then make our way back to the ferry for our return trip to St. Marys. 33 miles total. Saturday, Feb. 26 - Head by car to the Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge and Okefenokee Adventures. We will arrive in time for lunch and an overview of the swamp by Chip and Joy Campbell. Then we start paddling the swamp by canoe or kayak on our guided tour of this third photographer's paradise of the week. After our tour, we will continue by car to Waycross, GA, where we will spend the night at the Jameson Inn, one of BRAG's sponsors. Sunday, February 27 - After breakfast at the Jameson Inn, check out and head home to BRAG about your week's winter adventure in Georgia. Georgia BikeFest 2011

The Georgia BikeFest will be October 14-16, 2011, and will be held in Columbus, GA. BRAG 2010 stayed two nights in Columbus during its week-long ride in June and the riders thoroughly enjoyed their visit. We will camp at the same site as BRAG, right next to the Chattahoochee River and Riverwalk, within walking distance of restaurants and pubs. The good news is the City of Columbus wants us back and is planning an exciting weekend. Mark your calendar now to attend.

BRAG Rider of the Month - Henry Perez
I took up riding 4 years ago and took my family on our 1st BRAG in 2008. This summer we completed our third BRAG with my youngest daughter, Katie (7), riding 212 miles with me on a tandem and my oldest, Lily (13), who has Rett Syndrome, riding 60 miles in her pull behind recumbent; 46 miles behind the tandem and 14 miles, on the last day into Fayetteville, behind a hybrid.
In October, I rode a 590 mile section of my friend's and fellow Rett dad KC Byrd's - Rett Ride Across America. I rode with him from Panama City, FL to Houston, TX in six days and then added another 600+ in October. I did this as part of a Strollathon; most of our girls cannot walk so we stroll which, so far has raised $107k for Rett Syndrome Research. http://www.firstgiving.com/southfloridastroll
I ride because Rett Syndrome makes it impossible for my daughter, Lily, to effectively control her muscles. This means she cannot talk, has problems walking, cannot use her hands, and many other issues. However, she loves to be involved with people and we try to integrate/include her as much as possible. The pull behind recumbent was adapted by another Rett dad, Denis Sutherlin, an avid biker, who tries to make it possible for anyone with a disability to ride. The chain is reversed and when the bike moves the pedals move which is great exercise for Lily. For more info on Rett Syndrome visit http://www.rettsyndrome.org/
I ride to stay healthy so I can take care of her for as long as I can. I ride because being on the bike is great fun and something we can do as a family. We ride in BRAG because it's well organized, most everyone rides to have fun, and people are friendly and supportive. Both my girls and I enjoy meeting people along the way. I ride to get out and do something, to push myself, to relax, and to enjoy life.
