BRAG WinterRide 2011
St. Marys WinterRide (Ride/Hike/Boat Adventure) February 22 - 27, 2011
BRAG's second WinterRide will start in beautiful St. Marys, Georgia. The dates are Tuesday, February 22, 2011, through Sunday, February 27, 2011. The average high temperature this week in St. Marys is 65ºF. St. Marys is 350 miles from Atlanta and takes about 5 hours to drive. This would make a great Valentine's Day present for the sweetie cyclist in your life. Non-riders are welcomed also. Tuesday, Feb. 22 - Arrive early enough at St. Marys and bike 3 miles to the St. Marys Submarine Museum and the Cumberland Island Museum in downtown St. Marys. Bring a bottle or two of your favorite wines for our nightly wine tasting / happy hour. Optional dinner together at a local restaurant. Wednesday, Feb. 23 - Ride the 33-mile St. Marys Loop Ride, led by local cyclists. Visit the oldest church in Georgia, a War of 1812 site, the U.S. Navy Submarine Base, including the USS Bancroft Memorial, the Sugar Mill tabby ruins, and Crooked River State Park. Thursday, Feb. 24 - We will take the ferry to Cumberland Island. Bike (you can rent one on the island) or just walk the 5-mile recommended leisurely hike on the island. Either way, Cumberland Island is one of the most beautiful places on earth and is a photographer's paradise. February is the time to see it, without the heat and the bugs. Friday, Feb. 25 - Ride your bike to downtown St. Marys. Then take the ferry to Fernandina, FL. We will have optional lunch at the Gourmet Gourmet restaurant, then head out to visit Ft. Clinch. After Ft. Clinch, we will bike to the Atlantic Ocean for a beachfront snack. Then make our way back to the ferry for our return trip to St. Marys. 33 miles total. Saturday, Feb. 26 - Head by car to the Okefenokee Wildlife Refuge and Okefenokee Adventures. We will arrive in time for lunch and an overview of the swamp by Chip and Joy Campbell. Then we start paddling the swamp by canoe or kayak on our guided tour of this third photographer's paradise of the week. After our tour, we will continue by car to Waycross, GA, where we will spend the night at the Jameson Inn, one of BRAG's sponsors. Sunday, February 27 - After breakfast at the Jameson Inn, check out and head home to BRAG about your week's winter adventure in Georgia. BRAG Rider of the Month - Joseph Totter
In February, 2008, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. At age 41 I weighed 340 lbs and was suffering from vision problems, pinched nerves, difficulty walking, mouth sores, and high cholesterol, on top of asthma. I was given two choices, continue as I was and die, or change my life. I decided I was very attached to having a pulse, so I changed my diet and bought a stationary bike in an attempt to burn off some calories. I started out able to ride only 5 minutes a day, but it was a start. 5 minutes slowly became 10, then 20, then 30, and eventually an hour. My first bicycle was an inexpensive mountain bike from Wal-Mart, but after being passed by quite a few "roadies," I invested in a real road bike. I even got online to learn what cyclists do and read about century rides. 100 miles on a bike? I could never do that! But by this time I was able to ride about 40 miles, so I signed up for the metric course of the 2009 Hospitality Highway ride and I was hooked! I registered for the Covington century a few weeks after that, figuring if I could do 63 miles, then maybe 80 was a good next step. I thought I knew about cycling, but somehow I missed the part about road markings, and consequently missed the course turn off. As a result, my first century ride was actually by accident. When I finished, it struck me as to what I had accomplished, it was a VERY emotional moment for me. Two and ½ years after my initial diagnosis, I have lost 160 lbs, my cholesterol is normal, I no longer have to take any of my diabetes medicine and I've done more riding than I would ever have ever thought possible. I am a member of a riding team of Type 2 diabetics (Team Type 2), and if there is a century around, I'm there. Since August of 2009 I have completed more than 30 century rides. I ride from 25 to 32 miles a day during the week and whatever ride is around for the weekend, sometimes two. So, if you see a guy on a white Kestrel with the TT2 jersey, that's me, because cycling saved my life. Joe Totter before,
Joe Totter after,
Note Joe's Centurion Club hat, his reward for riding 3 of BRAG's century rides for 2010. If you or a friend would like to be Rider of the Month, please tell us your story and send us a photo or two. Send to Jerry@brag.org. And, hey, it's OK to BRAG about yourself. It's in our DNA.
