Dear Yogis and Yoginis

shamrockWelcome to March! Spring officially begins on the 20th but if the grassy spots on the lawns around town are anything to go by it looks like we are already seeing signs of spring. Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam, didn't see his shadow on groundhog day last month so maybe he knew what he was talking about. Not that it matters, since as hardy Newfoundlanders and yogis we will take whatever we get and make the best of it. Even if winter does make a short return you will be healthy and energized after trying out our healthy green soup recipe, just in time for St. Patricks Day on the 17th. Also check out the info. on upcoming workshops and our special Earth Hour class happening on the 31st. End the month feeling great and knowing that you have helped out a great cause. Have a great March all!

Earth Hour Candlelight Restorative yoga: Proceeds to Habitat for Humanity

candlesEarth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. Only a year later Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating. Global landmarks such as the, Sydney Harbour Bridge, The CN Tower in Toronto, The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome's Colosseum, all stood in darkness, as symbols of hope for a cause that grows more urgent by the hour. If you are unfamiliar with Earth Hour you can go to www.earthhour.org  for more details.

During this special candlelit class  we'll explore restorative asana (postures), pranayama (breathwork) and a seated meditation. It is suitable for all levels.

All proceeds will go to support Habitat for Humanity. One of our yoginis, Helena, is part of a local team that will be travelling to South America in April to build homes for families who do not have safe and sanitary places to live. This year on earth day allow your body and mind  to restore as we give that same gift to the earth AND help provide safe housing for families in need at the same time. I can't think of a better way to spend one hour of your life!

For the comfort and safety of everyone participating in this lights-out class we will not be admitting latecomers. The studio doors will be locked at 8:30pm as we turn out the lights. Thank you in advance for your understanding and see you there as we support the earth and all it's citizens together!

Date: Sat, Mar 31st, Time: 8:30-9:30pm Cost: $14 +tax *Pre-registration is required. Click here to register and pay online.

Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Helena Butler & Family

About the Habitat for Humanity Project: Here is some information provided by Helena on the Habitat for Humanity volunteers and project.

Our team is made up of 12 local family members and friends and we will be travelling to La Matanza, Argentina in April to work on two homes. This is an ongoing project in an area of the city which is unfortunately overwhelmed with families living in unsafe, inadequate housing without proper sewage and is one of the poorest municipalities surrounding Buenos Aires. Waste management in this area is a serious problem as the area lacks its own waste collection program which has turned part of the neighbourhood literally into a garbage dump. Potable water for family consumption is also limited and difficult to access due to limited road infrastructure and no public transportation. Our first project will be to put the finishing touches on one family's home by sanding and painting the final product. Our second project will be to dig the foundation of a new home and then mix, by hand, the cement for the foundation in addition to preparing the rebar for the foundation.

Shakti Teacher Highlight: Robin Penny & Heart Flow Yoga

Robin Mermaid Pose

Why I teach yoga starts with why I started practicing yoga. I came to yoga because, simply put, I needed a break. Some time to myself. A way to quiet down my mind. First and foremost, I'm a wife to my wonderful husband, Mark, and a mother to my two young children, Hannah (almost 9) and Sam (6). The family has boundless energy...and demands!! I also have a "day job": I work out of my home office as a product manager for a software company based in the States. I design software for accountants, which is very satisfying work. I used to be an accountant, and now get to use my background to do something decidedly creative, and I work with great people. My husband is also very busy with his architecture firm. It's a delightful life we lead, and yet extremely busy, with little time for simple enjoyment or relaxation.

I have been practicing yoga off and on since the late '90s, but my serious yoga practice began a few years ago when my life officially hit a point of burn out. I was also inspired by friends of mine who did yoga as a workout to get great results and seemed be at a greater place of centeredness. Finally, I truly needed to work on some things internally...I needed more self-understanding, more self-acceptance, more patience, more forgiveness of myself and of others. I still need more of those things, but I'm working on it. So though yoga drew me in because of the physical and mental asana practice, it also gave me a place to start to discover myself in ways I never imagined.

I have been teaching at Shakti for almost a year now. My teaching style combines the all things I love about yoga: right effort, safe alignment, heart, flow, and breath work.

"Right effort" is all about doing enough for where you are with your practice. Not too little and not too much. Therefore, I endeavor to deliver classes where you feel cared for, and are also challenged to go to your edge.

Robin Side CrowIn 2010, I discovered Anusara Yoga's elegant and highly effective Universal Principles of Alignment. My asana practice leapt forward significantly when I started employing these principles, and I also got in touch with my body at a much deeper place because of the sometimes subtle shifts that are made over time by moving the bones and muscles using the system. We can all benefit from these alignment principles in the body in the short and long term, no matter our age, size, flexibility, or strength. When something as simple as spreading your baby toes out to the side causes you to fly up in Bakasana (Crow Pose), that is exciting for everyone! And therapeutic too. Just try it.

In my Heart Flow classes, each class has an emotional, mental, or spiritual theme, which we explore using the qualities that we feel in the physical body to make that connection. For example, when exploring the principle of Muscle Energy, which involves hugging your muscles strongly to the bone --easy to feel when your thighs are quivering in a pose like Utkatasana (Chair Pose) -- we might cultivate corresponding qualities of the heart such as confidence, stability, or resolve. Or we might focus on the principle of Organic Energy, where we expand from the core of our physical center out to the edges of the body -- such as in Mermaid Pose, where the heart comes forward and up, and we seem to shine out in our bodies. When working on Organic Energy, we might be cultivating qualities like creativity, fun, playfulness, or courage. When we can make a connection to an emotion or a part of life's struggle on the mat, it becomes a training ground for how we handle ourselves off the mat.

Even though we're learning things and doing deep work, movement with flow is very important, especially when we spend so much time sitting in cars or at desks or on airplanes or carrying children. So I try to keep classes moving with music that inspires.

Breath work is absolutely incorporated, simply so we can remain connected to that vital force of life within us. It's what connects us all together at the highest place. It calms us and centers us. So the breath is the focus in all of our movement. We open to it and let it lead us. Where many of us, me included, find it tempting to want to control things around us, letting the breath take the lead is very freeing, so it the most fundamental part of the practice, every time.

Robin Face ShotMy goal as a teacher is to provide a welcoming place of refuge where anyone can work on the things that they need to work on most. Everyone comes to the mat seeking something different. But we all come seeking balance. Whether that is physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual, balance is not a state we arrive at, but is something that is always in flux. Some days we may need more activity, and other days we may need more softening and quiet. Yoga gives us a pathway in which to explore this movement toward balance every time we come to the mat, and through that exploration, to discover our own greatness.

Robin teaches Heart Flow (Mixed Level) on Tuesdays at 7pm at the Torbay Road studio. She also helps out with periodically subbing for other teachers at both locations.

Inspired Fitness

mel squarey 2

Submitted by yogini and yoga teacher trainee, Mel Squarey

I've been inspired. Really, I've been motivated - toward a new goal. After dealing with a few body issues in the past and currently with a particular injury, I've had to shift my whole paradigm of what I think yoga is. Actually, my definitions of yoga may change from day to day at will, kind of like a cannon on loose fire with no direct target. Firing at will sir! Honestly, I love that about myself. I don't hold too strictly about what yoga is or how it should be. That's not the point.

The point is tradition, a tradition that can be practiced in modern terms with individual aptitude. "We all have our own yoga, everyone's yoga can be different" says my teacher Bobby. My yoga before I had this epiphany was completely different from where I think my yoga is going today. I had thought that yoga was about where I was getting instead of where I am right now. I wanted the flexibility, the openness, the peace and when I got it I swelled with joy. But, I shot over the first base of yoga. It's about the journey not the destination.

I'm not the average lady, not in size, shape, or fitness. In the past, I often got caught up in those facts, being insecure about them. I think average is a little boring, and to be honest I think that most people are far from even regarding themselves as average. I got called "fit" today, by a medical professional who's helping me with some physical issues. She caught me by surprise when she said "You're healing so fast because you're so fit. It's good to see in patients."  My brain deep-fried. I have never really considered myself fit. Fit? Are you really serious? My brain was on that well-known track of self-discrimination.

I was stopped at a red light in my car when it hit me. I guess I am pretty fit. I've committed myself to daily practice for about 3 months now. I'm aware of my body in space. I can hike a 20km round-trip in the back-country. I can climb up a rock face at the edge of the ocean. The actual issue here is that my mind tends to compare me with those magazine people when I think about physical achievement.

The way that I do my yoga, the way that I look, they're really just unimportant. I'm actually quite healthy and if I make these unrealistic comparisons then I'm not practicing yoga at all, am I?     Sometimes my hips are tight and sometimes I have to do a pose in variation, but as my teacher Mel SquareyBobby always says "You're still getting the same benefits". One of my other teachers, Meaghan, always talks to the class about their poses being beautiful. I really appreciate and find gratitude in that.

In the moment, when I feel like my pose is actually beautiful, I get brought back to the point of my yoga. To find that moving meditation that's life-changing and self-promoting. I get to use my body in the shape and size that it is in. I can't make comparisons to other people's yoga because that's not mine. We are part of the same circle and what looks one way when I do it, is equal to the way that those people in the magazine do it. I am fit. I am practicing my yoga in my way, everyday. I am grateful for that opportunity and the opportunity that my body and my teachers give me each time I approach the mat.

If you are a student of yoga and would like to share an inspiring moment, favourite pose, yoga travel experience or anything else related to living your yoga you can send your piece (one to three paragraphs) to bobby@shaktiyogastudio.ca.

Studio Etiquette : Scent Free and Silent

Scent Free Image

Because some of your fellow yoga students have strong sensitivities to scents, Shakti Yoga Studios are scent free. Please be mindful of not wearing colognes, perfumes or other strongly-scented personal-care products when coming to class, so that everyone is able to enjoy their yoga experience in comfort and good health.

Yoga MudraWe would also like to request that you be mindful of noise inside the yoga room. You may have noticed that many students take the time before class to unwind, release their day and practice meditative contemplation. When speaking with others inside the practice space, please be aware and respectful of those who are choosing to spend this time in silence by Cell Phonekeeping your voice low, and avoid making any unnecessary noises.

We also request that you leave your cell phones outside the practice room as even texting can be distracting for your fellow classmates.

Thank you for understanding,

Namaste

Have a wonderful March!
