Dear Yogis and Yoginis

Man on CliffRegular schedules resume, schools are back in session and that sense of all things beginning anew is in the air; September has arrived. This is such an invigorating and motivating time of the year. What a great time of year to set an intention and follow through on it. Make a midday walk part of your lunchtime routine, decide to pack a healthy lunch instead of swinging through a drive though, choose to spend 10 minutes a day to meditate or do the thing that inspires and energizes you most. Start your healthy practices with the rest your Fall routines before less healthy ones have time to develop. In yoga the sanskrit word sankalpa is used to express this act of setting an intention. Once this is done with sincerity the habit is already half formed. If you feel that you need some extra support consider joining our 30 day challenge that will start in October or look into participating in one of the many other events happening at the studio in September.

Remember the wise words of Star War's Yoda, "Try not. Do or do not. There is no try."  Be an inspiration for others as you open yourself up to be inspired by those around you and have a wonderful September full of healthy habits.

Kirtan: Sound Meditation

amy theissen hat

For those of you who are interested in attending Amy's live concert at the Torbay Road studio this month you may have read the word kirtan and wondered what this referred to. The Sanskrit word itself can be broken into two root words, mana which means the mind, and tra which means to deliver, meaning this practice has the power to deliver the mind from material consciousness or perception, to spiritual consciousness or enlightenment. Jai Uttal, a well known yogi musician, has said, "with Kirtan, we create a temple inside the altar of our hearts, a place of refuge, a place of love, and a place of just being."

When participating in Kirtan simple mantras are repeated over and over, faster and faster. Daily distractions are able to be released and you can pour yourself into the joy of the moment. We often get so preoccupied with our daily problems and concerns that it becomes difficult to remember all that is going well; all the things that we have to be grateful for. Yes, you can chant at home by yourself but vocalizing together with live music and other people adding their energy to the chant is a magical and unifying experience. We all resonate at different frequencies, and this resonance changes according to what we are doing and thinking. When we are all singing the same thing, breathing together, and moving to the same rhythms, our vibrations begin to synchronize and the resulting experience is very powerful, so even if you haven't had a great day kirtan resets your body and attunes you to a more positive way of being. In fact even if you sit and listen only you can feel a shift. The shared experience awakens the spirit that exists in us all.

One reason that this practice is so catharic may be that the repetitive nature of chanting causes us to breathe deeply and more rhythmically. Chanting is a sound meditation. Sound is an energy and when we speak these vibrations move throughout the body. Mark Rider, a clinical psychologist and music therapist, has reported study results indicating that chanting reduces stress hormones and increases immune function. This results in less muscle tension, slower heart rate, lower blood pressure and an increase in the brain wave activation that is present when the body and mind are at ease.

Amy's event concert will be a combination of concert style performace and kirtan, including the call-response practice often used in Kirtan. So drop by the Torbay Road studio on Thursday, September 22nd at 8:30 to hear some great music from a talented musician and also experience the transformative bliss of kirtan.

 Blueberry Muffins

BlueberriesWe are so fortunate to live in a place that not only grows one of the healthiest foods on earth in abundance but because of the quality of our soil they are even healthier here than those grown elsewhere. Just in time for blueberry season and for back to school, this months recipe has anti-oxidant-rich blueberries, fibre-filled oat bran, and flax seeds for a shot of omega-3 fatty acids. Muffins are are great on-the-go meals. Freeze them to pack for busy days and avoid the temptation of fast food when you don't have time to stop for a leisurely meal.

If you have the time consider picking the berries yourself. There are lots of great spots in our beautiful city to find these beautiful blue treats. Remember to take deep breaths and take in your surroundings as you pluck your food from its source. This is a moving meditation and will add as many healthy years onto your life as all the healthy ingredients inside your muffins. Enjoy!

Blueberry Muffins

1 cup white whole wheat flour

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

3/4 cup oat bran

3/4 cup ground flax seed meal

1/2 tsp. salt

2 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. lemon zest

3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

1/2 cup egg substitute

3/4 cup nonfat buttermilk

1 tsp. vanilla

2 Tbsp. canola oil

2 cups blueberries, divided

3/4 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease 2 muffin trays.

In a large mixing bowl, stir together flours, oat bran, flax-seed meal, salt, baking soda, baking powder and lemon zest. In another large mixing bowl, whisk together brown sugar, egg substitute, buttermilk, vanilla and canola oil.

Pour all but 1 tablespoon of the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Stir until the dry ingredients are incorporated into the batter. Toss blueberries with the reserved tablespoon of dry ingredients. Fold walnuts and 1-1/2 cups of the blueberries into muffin batter. Fill muffin tins with batter. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup of blueberries on top of muffins, and press them down lightly.

Bake 20-25 minutes until muffins are lightly browned.

Makes 12 muffins.

Studio Etiquette : Scent Free and Silent

Scent Free Image

Because some of your fellow yoga students have strong sensitivities to scents, Shakti Yoga Studios are scent free. Please be mindful of not wearing colognes, perfumes or other strongly-scented personal-care products when coming to class, so that everyone is able to enjoy their yoga experience in comfort and good health.

Yoga MudraWe would also like to request that you be mindful of noise inside the yoga room. You may have noticed that many students take the time before class to unwind, release their day and practice meditative contemplation. When speaking with others inside the practice space, please be aware and respectful of those who are choosing to spend this time in silence by keeping your voice low, and avoid making any unnecessary noises.

Thank you for understanding,

Namaste
