Dear Yogis and Yoginis

summer sunflowerWelcome to June, the month that heralds the official arrival of all things summer, sunny days, leafy trees, grass blowing in the breeze, and fresh summer air. There is something truly magical about a season that has the power to lift the spirits and bring a smile to your face every time you step outside your front door.

To help enhance your transition into summer, check out this month's article on the summer solstice and the 108 sun salutations that are so often used to celebrate this day, the first day of summer. This is also, of course, the season of salad, so be sure to also try out our hemp seed salad dressing recipe to give you all the energy and vitamins you need to get out and enjoy the sunshine, feeling great.

Plus, don't forget the dads this month! Happy Father's Day and Happy June to all!

Shelter of Yoga: Fundraiser for Japan

Yoga Atlantic Japan Fundraiser

On Saturday, April 30th, yogis and yoginis in St. John's came together to support those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Approximately 50 people attended and $2225 was raised!! Thank you to all those who attended and donated, to Laura-Beth Power for doing such a great job organizing this event, to Meaghan Burridge for leading the class and finally to Yoga Atlantic for initiating this movement. The energy in this room was amazing!

 Shanti Uganda Yoga Mat Bags
Shanti Uganda Mat BagsOur new mat bags are fairly traded and hand made with love by women in the Shanti Uganda Income Generating Group. Each bag is a unique Handmade Ugandan batik creation. The women in this group are HIV positive and either a grandmother taking care of multiple grandchildren, a widow, or in extreme poverty. These women learn skills and are provided with supplies to help them develop a marketable skill. Every bag sold helps the Shanti Uganda Society improve the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of communities impacted by war, poverty and HIV/AIDS in Uganda. Click here for more information on this society, or to make a donation.

 Shakti Yoga Studio Blog News!

blog imageAs many of you may know, Shakti Yoga Studio has a blog that covers all things yoga. In an attempt to make this resource even more informative and personal than before, we are excited to announce that we now have a "resident blogger"! Kate Barley, a PhD student at the Marine Institute, who's here from the UK, is going to be blogging weekly about her experience in taking on a four-class-per-week yoga challenge, at the studio. She'll be blogging throughout the summer while she attends all of our classes and explores the transformational affect of yoga!

Kate will be starting her journey on June 1st, so expect to start seeing her in some of your classes. You can click here for a link to our blog so that you can follow Kate's story as it unfolds.

108 Sun Salutations to celebrate Summer Solstice

solstice stone hengeThe summer solstice results in the longest day, and the shortest night, of the year, in the Northern Hemisphere.  Sol + stice derives from a combination of Latin words meaning "sun" + "to stand still." As the days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky. Awed by the great life-giving power of the sun, civilizations all over the globe have, for centuries, celebrated the first day of summer, the summer solstice.

The most ancient Vedic texts, from which much yoga tradition and philosophy originates, place an extreme amount of importance on showing reverence and respect for the sun. While yoga has developed much in the 3000 years since the Vedas are thought to have been composed, there is still very much a place for this solar reverence in the modern day yoga practice.

We have all done Sun Salutations in class and may, or may not, have thought about the sun's significance in this beautiful meditative flow, as we move though the postures together. However, by very definition, this series is an opportunity to attune your body and mind with a sense of honoring the life-giving properties of the sun. The series itself is not documented in ancient texts, but a product of many years of yoga evolution, a relatively new way to express an ancient idea. It is an opportunity to connect with our place in the universe as we raise our arms to the sky and open our hearts to the sun and then bend forward to connect with the life-giving essence of the earth. In more practical terms, it is an opportunity to feel gratitude for things that we often take for granted like the sun above us, the earth below us, and the air that we breathe

From a purely physical perspective, the sun salutation is a wonderful way to move all the muscles and joints in the body, wake up the organs, boost the circulation and balance your Nervous System. It is a pre-set series that you can do any time you have 5 minutes to spare. It can be done quickly, to invigorate, or slowly, with longer held poses, as a balancing meditation. All of these things make it a useful, health-giving tool to pull out when you are travelling, don't have time for a full class, or just feel like moving on a sunny day out!

sun salutation 2This year on summer solstice, Tuesday, June 21st, Shakti Yoga Studio will be welcoming the rising sun on first day of summer with 108 sun salutations. Why 108 you might ask? The significance of the number 108 is open to interpretation however it has long been considered a sacred number in yoga tradition. Vedic mathematicians saw 108 as a number of wholeness of existence. It is thought to connect the Sun, Moon, and Earth: The average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters. As a result of this significance, you will see this number pop up in many yoga traditions. For example, Yoga malas (garlands of meditation beads) come in a string of 108. We also think 108 is just enough sun salutations to wake you up, warm the body, and to create a sense of having done something significantly different from your regular practice to celebrate the arrival of summer.

So whether you do it to celebrate the birth of summer, with a physical and mental expression of gratitude, or to just challenge your strength and stamina in a fun way, or both, you will leave feeling wide awake, exhilarated and part of the beginning of summer yourself!

Time: 6:30-8:00am Date: June 21st Location: Torbay Road Shakti Yoga Studio

Cost: Use your membership/class pass or purchase a drop-in.

Pre-registration is required for this session.

Good-Bye from Lisa

Lisa Bio PicMany of you know that we will be saying good-bye to Lisa, this month. She is an inspirational teacher, and while we are happy that she is moving on to an exciting new job on the other side of the planet, we are very sad to see her go. She wrote us a short good-bye note that I have pasted below:

"As excited as I am to start this new adventure I'm going to miss seeing the familiar faces of so many students that I've come to adore and look forward to seeing each week. I leave St. John's June 7th. As you wake up on July 1 to celebrate Canada Day, I'll be climbing into bed after my fist day at the studio.

I'm going to be teaching Moksha at The Yoga Asylimb in Pukehoke, NZ, just outside of Auckland.

When I'm not teaching I plan to learn how to surf, take in the 2011 Rugby World Cup and travel the country on weekends and during the summer (December). I will stay in touch. Best of luck to you all, you will be missed."

So if you see Lisa again before she goes be sure to wish her happy yogic travels.

 30 Day Meditation Challenge

meditating woman grassHow long does it take for a new habit to be formed? For it to become second nature? This is a hotly debated topic however most of us would agree that 30 days of regular practice of anything is a good start.

Those who attended our recent workshop on neroscience and meditation are full of motivating scienfitic evidence showing how just a few weeks of regular meditation practice (in some cases even just 20 minutes a day) can alter brain size, increase brain activity, boost the immune system and make radical transformations in quality of life.

So why not give yourself a few weeks to try and reap these same benefits yourself? The key is to start slowly and build gradually. Pull out your egg timer and start with 5 minutes of watching the breath. Or sit and count 10 breaths, trying to keep your awareness on the breath from start to finish. You can start over each time the mind wanders until you make it to 10 undistracted. Remember that there is no particular feeling to meditating. Just keep coming back to the breath and trust that there is value in sitting and being in the moment. The yogis have been saying so for thousands of years and scientists now agree too.

Hemp Heart Salad Dressing

Hemp Hearts contain all the essential amino acids our bodies need. It is the only single source of plant protein that is so complete and easily digested. It also includes a good balance between omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids (which are not fats that are stored in our body so we have to eat sufficient amounts daily). People report that this highly nutritious food leaves them feeling full and energized for long periods of time, possibly due to their wonderful balance of protein and healthy fats with little sugar, carbohydrates and saturated fats.

And on top of all this, they are so yummy! They work on, or in, just about anything. They blend nicely into fruit smoothies to balance sharper fruit flavors, and also taste great sprinkled on cereals and baked into muffins, cakes and cookies. If you are in a rush you can even eat a spoonful or two for a high energy fix before popping out the door. If you are a salad lover, the nutty smooth flavour of this tasy hemp seed salad dressing will have you reaching for a second helping of greens this Summer.

Hemp hearts can be bought in many health food stores. I pick mine up at Vitality Products, in the Wellness center on Bonaventure Avenue.

HempheartsHemp Heart Salad Dressing

Ingredients:

1 small garlic clove
1/8 cup of red wine vinegar
1/4 cup water (or olive oil if you want a creamy dressing)
1/4 cup of hemp seeds
2 tsp of olive oil (if you use water instead of oil)
1 tsp of honey
4 tsp orange juice
Sea salt to taste
Ground pepper to taste

Just throw this all in a blender until creamy. It takes about 10 minutes from start to finish, including the time it takes to pull out the ingredients. Top your favourite greens with this mixture and enjoy all the flavour as you congratulate yourself on being so good to your body.

Note: I have also seen this recipe done with Goat cheese instead of water/olive oil. Add water if you need a thinner consistency. This is also very good!
Congratulations to our Bring a Friend Contest Winners
friends yogaThank you to everyone who introduced friends to our Shakti Mount Pearl location and got entered to win some great yoga prizes. The two lucky winners are Eryn Wall, who won the Halfmoon Eco Mat, and Hilary Warren who picked up a scented warming pillow and matching eye pillow. What better way to show your friends you care than to introduce them to a yoga practice. Nice going friends!

Studio Etiquette : Scent Free and Silent

Scent Free Image

Because some of your fellow yoga students have strong sensitivities to scents, Shakti Yoga Studios are scent free. Please be mindful of not wearing colognes, perfumes or other strongly-scented personal-care products when coming to class, so that everyone is able to enjoy their yoga experience in comfort and good health.

Yoga MudraWe would also like to request that you be mindful of noise inside the yoga room. You may have noticed that many students take the time before class to unwind, release their day and practice meditative contemplation. When speaking with others inside the practice space, please be aware and respectful of those who are choosing to spend this time in silence by keeping your voice low, and avoid making any unnecessary noises.

Thank you for understanding,

Namaste
