Dear Yogis and Yoginis
hands and heartWith so many reminders all around us, February is a wonderful time to immerse ourselves in all things love related. Many of the postures and practices that we do here at the studio work toward opening our hearts and releasing the love and compassion that we have to share with the world around us. If you don't have a romantic partner this February you can use this time to reflect upon and deepen all of the relationships that allow you to share the beauty that is inside you. This could be your family, friends or those you connect with through community groups and events. And most importantly spend some time being kind and loving towards yourself. You deserve it!
Saluting the Sun
sun salutation 2
Immerse yourself in Surya Namaskar, an ancient series of yoga movements dedicated to the sun. In this workshop we will explore asana (postures), pranayama (breath), mantra (sound yoga), yoga history, anatomy and subtle body concepts as they relate to Surya Namascar. This workshop will be held on Saturday February 27th, 3-6pm.

Partner Yoga
Practicing with a partner is a fun way to deepen, expand and energize your yoga practice. Choosing to share your yoga with someone special can be a bonding experience, helping you connect and expand your relationship in a powerful way. When you do postures with another person you surrender to your partner's adjustments and support while tuning in to their body language and breath. Partner yoga allows you to transcend your physical connection and move toward a mental and energetic exchange. This can take any number of forms depending on whether you are a couple, friends or family. The Mom and Baby and Family Yoga classes at the studio  are particularly beautiful examples of partner yoga in action. For couples, partner yoga is an opportunity to use the asana to develop trust, communication and intimacy through touch and movement. Consider adding a fun element to your Valentine's Day this year by practicing some of the partner postures below with someone you love.

Yin Yoga
yin yoga
If you have never heard of Yin Yoga, it's a practice that brings you deeper into opening the connective tissues thorough long held floor postures. You learn to listen closely to your physical and energetic inner wisdom. A strong emphasis is placed on human anatomy and skeletal variation. Postures are adapted to meet individual needs from moment to moment. If this is something that you would like to learn more about, we will be offering a Yin Yoga Weekend of quiet practice this summer. Stephanie Guitar, E-RYT, RMT, BA will instruct this 3 day yoga intensive/teacher training.
Chocolate Love Hearts
almond chocolatesThis Valentines Day treat the special people in your life to handmade chocolate treats that are not only made with love but are also good for them. Hight quality chocolate is full of heart strengthening flavonoids and is a source of magnesium, copper and calcium. Stir in your personality as you choose your own spices and toppings to make these chocolate hearts.

Ingredients:

12 oz (375 g) 70% dark chocolate (or semi-sweet), chopped
1 cup (250 mL) chopped, toasted almonds or hazelnuts, divided
Optional: ¾ tsp (4 mL) coarse sea salt

Choose from chopped pistachios, almonds, pecans, shredded coconut, sunflower seeds, any nut or seed that you love.

If you want to experiment and you enjoy spicy flavors try adding candied ginger bits, orange essence, nutmeg, any sweet spice that you enjoy. This will intensify the flavour as well as the health quotient of the chocolate.

Directions:

Melt chocolate in a bowl set over simmering water for 1½ to 2 minutes. Remove from heat before the chocolate is completely melted and stir to finish melting.
Stir in half the nuts, then the salt and spices (if any).
Evenly spread mixture into a rectangle approximately 8 x 12 in (20 x 30 cm) on a baking sheet lined with a nonstick baking mat or parchment. Sprinkle with remaining nuts and topping. Chill for 30 minutes or until just set.
Cut with a heart shaped cookie cutter (cutting as close together as possible).

Store in the refrigerator and serve cold.

We are sending you all warm February wishes of love, laughter and good health.
