Dear Yogis and Yoginis
Opening Bob Meg
Welcome to the first Shakti Yoga Studio monthly newsletter. It is appropriate that this issue falls into the Thanksgiving month as we have so much to be thankful for here at the Studio. As you may have noticed, our first month has been super busy. We have already added new classes to the schedule and have lots of great ideas for upcoming classes and workshops. Thank you all for helping  create the beginnings of a beautiful yoga community here in the city.

Family Yoga for kids (3-5) and Mom or Dad
Michael Downward Dog
Kids are natural yogis. Yoga helps children build physical strength, confidence, creativity and concentration. Due to many requests, we are now offering a special 6 week family yoga class on Saturday mornings ( 9-10 am) from Nov 7-Dec 12. The registration Deadline is October 30th.
Seniors Yoga

Our Yoga for Seniors class is so popular that we have added a new class on Monday mornings from 10:45-12:00 in addition to the Thursday morning class. The seniors class is an excellent option for older adults seeking a gentle approach to yoga. This class makes use of props such as chairs, bolsters and the wall to ensure the comfort of every student. Each class will include breathing practices to enhance lung capacity and mindfulness, hand mudras for arthritic hands, supported yoga postures for physical strength and flexibility, and a deep, guided relaxation.

Brew Your Own Yogi Tea
Indian Spices Now that the weather is getting chilly a cup of Yogi tea is a good way to warm your mind, body and spirit with lots of yummy flavor and health benefits.

Traditional Indian chai uses lots of  both milk and sugar and contains only a small amount of spice,  usually just cardamom. Yogi tea has more spice and can be served with or without the black tea, the milk, or the sugar.

The main spices used in Yogi tea are: cardamom, ginger, long pepper, and cinnamon. Cardamom and ginger are thought to help to reduce mucus, relieve gas, calm the stomach, stimulate digestion, and eliminate toxins. Long pepper does all this, as well as reduces pain and rejuvenates tissue. Cinnamon is similar to cardamom and ginger in properties and is also good for the circulation and the heart.

Here is a basic yogi tea recipe. Bring two quarts of water to a boil and then add the following spices: one-half tablespoon long pepper (whole black peppercorns can be substituted), one heaping tablespoon cardamom seeds, six sticks of cinnamon, and four slices of fresh ginger root, peeled.
Reduce the heat and let the spice mixture simmer for 30 minutes. Add one and one-half teaspoons black tea and then let steep for no longer than 10 minutes. (It becomes too bitter after that.) Strain and add milk, honey, or maple syrup to taste.

Try taking a walk in the crisp Autumn air followed by a curl-up at home with a cup of this aromatic tea and watch the leaves fall from your window. Indian yogis recommend a cup or two of this per day for good health.
We look forward to moving into the Autumn season with all of you radiant yogis. We will om, breathe and relax our way into this busy season together with strong bodies, minds and spirits, ready to face all the hustle and bustle around us with clarity and calm.

Sincerely,

Bobby and Meaghan
