| Nearground Rearground |
This year sees the Muswellbrook & Districts Camera Club tackle the subject of Nearground Rearground. Following in the Arts Centres long tradition of dynamics, the artists from one group were targeted to apply a specific discipline in photography to a subject that wrinkled many a brow. The aim was to apply the principles of depth of field to scenes, tableaux whatever they were aiming at. Depth of field means the amount of horizontal distance from the camera that is in sharp focus. This is achieved by simply applying different aperture settings on the camera to achieve their outcome, and based on their knowledge of the principles of depth of field, to come up with an interpretation based on the layers principles applied in Photoshop or some other digital manipulation programme but apply the layering technique in one shot so that the "layering" is achieved in camera rather than via the use of a computer programme. The result is a striking combination of maximum depth of field which is achieved by setting the camera to a small aperture such as F22 or alternatively minimum depth of field via the use of a large aperture, say F4. This exhibition will also pose a challenge to the viewer to see how the members of the club approached the subject matter and how they applied the principles of depth of field. The club agreed that it was a terrific learning exercise and invite the viewers to share their interpretations.
Exhibition kindly sponsored by Harvey Norman, Muswellbrook.

| Davson ~ Turning Point |
Davson was a full-time High School Teacher. She also taught evening classes in art for adult education facilities and art philosophy at the Queensland College of Art. Davson fulfilled a childhood dream of purchasing a small acreage in the Brisbane region's Lockyer Valley. From here, she commuted to teaching institutions, created art works, cared for horses and a variety of other animals, and was active in the local and broader communities assisting with arts-based activities. She resigned from her teaching appointments in late 1980 and sold her property. She used most of the proceeds to fund her enterprising artistic "apprenticeship on Australia" as she began her travels and new life as a freelance artist. Davson has kindly donated the entire series of works on paper from this exhibition to the Muswellbrook Shire Art Collection which will complement her existing work in the collection. Exhibition dates: 10th September - 23rd October 2011

| EDUCATION OFFICERS REPORT |
Things are moving apace; Roger recently spoke at the Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce breakfast and as a direct result of that several new projects are in the pipeline and flowing rapidly! As a result of an approach from one of the people present, we are exploring the possibilities of a new display initiative for works from the collection which will begin the process of one of my long held aims to get the collection out into the community. Watch this space!!
Secondly, Roger has been approached by a potential sponsor. A meeting was set up and as a result of that very productive meeting, further opportunities were explored around sponsorship of a major art prize with a different, previously ignored discipline. This sponsor is also in discussions with the Arts Centre around the temporary loan of works to hang in their premises for a one off occasion. Further developments can be anticipated and I will let the community know when things are more definite.
Those artists who have booked a place for the 'Driven To Abstraction' workshop en plein air will need to pay their fees at the Arts Centre as soon as they can to secure their place.
The presentation/framing workshop mentioned in the previous newsletter in which Roger will discuss how your works should be presented to the Arts Centre will be held on 11am Sunday 4th of September. Look forward to seeing you there!! This Workshop Is open to all local artists and is entry by gold coin donation!

| MDCC 2011 UPDATE | MDCC recently held their AGM with the election of officers and the setting of the assignments. Mark Southcombe is President, Roger Skinner is Secretary, John Hodges is the Treasurer, Lisa Atkinson and Kylie Bates have split the Competition Secretary's role as Lisa will be heading north later in the year and Angela Smith will continue as Critique Leader. The annual trophies were awarded with Lisa winning The Patrons Trophy for Colour Prints, The Karingal Cup for Black & White and the Photographer of The Year WELL DONE Lisa!! You scooped the pool! It was apparently a close contest but Lisa toughed it out, congratulations. Kylie Bates was awarded the Presidents Trophy which is awarded at the presidents discretion to an up and coming photographer and with Kylie's success further afield Mark made the award to Kylie. The assignments for the next twelve months were then discussed and we have some real beauts coming up such as Ritual, Mirror Mirror, Any One Of Seven Deadly Sins, and Plated Up as little challenges to the grey matter factory, and we are all looking forward to a great year.
The Muswellbrook & Districts Camera Club is open to anyone and we meet on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7.00pm at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre. Subscriptions are $25.00pa. Contact Roger Skinner 0407 002 777.
