Continuous Conversation
Opening night Saturday 16 July at 6.00pm, Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre

Continuous conversation
Dave Teer
'I am an intuitive maker. Often, the impetus for my work can be found simply in a line drawing, a poem, or a piece of music. The catalyst is always something that has struck a chord with me, something that has resonated through both my heart and my head at the same time, for whatever reason. I would like to think that I am a seeker of form; I only need that initial spark to begin. The work itself can then take hold, come into its own, have its own life. For me it's not about a preconceived idea, each work is about discovery, a journey. Like all journeys, it has its unexpected twists and turns, providing me with both highs and lows, culminating on the whole in a worthwhile and interesting experience. Each work is a learning event that ultimately leads me to the unexplored territory of new work.' Dave Teer

Dave was introduced to steel through his work as a boilermaker in Muswellbrook.

Dave Teers At SeaDave Teer studied at West Wollongong TAFE and was taught by Kevin Norton, Ivor Fabok and Elisabeth Cummings. Since 1998 he has been exhibiting in group and solo exhibitions throughout Australia. In 2005 Dave was chosen as the recipient of the Art OMI International Artist Residency in New York, USA. In 2003 he had an exhibition at the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre and in recent years has received private commissions to create large outdoor sculptures for many Sydney homes. Dave Teer is the first artist to be selected for the Enid Ng Artist Residency in Paris, 2010. Dave is recognized for both his silver stainless steel works and his painted mild steel sculptures. These colourfully painted works are a visual joy. His use of suspension, movement and colour enable great breadth of expression.

Ivor Fabok

Ivor FabokIn 1978 Ivor Fabok completed his studies at the City Art Institute, Sydney where he graduated in Fine Art. He began exhibiting sculpture in 1982 and his work has appeared in many solo and group shows in Sydney and Wollongong.

His work has been commissioned for the Wollongong Regional Gallery, the American Express building, Sydney and the Hyatt in Coolum, Queensland.

Ivor has a passion for jazz and in regard to his art and influences has said 'I like the freewheeling improvisation in jazz. When I listen to music I see colours. I read music as forms and structures. Colour can be form. A solid piece of blue, for example, can be a real form. It's in real space, its real blue and has enough to draw you in.'

In addition to an active studio practice Fabok and teaches sculpture at Wollongong TAFE and the National Art School, Sydney.

Paul Higgs

Paul HiggsPaul Higgs received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Winchester School of Art, UK. He has taught at the National Art School, Wollongong University, East Sydney, Gymea and Wollongong TAFE and College of Fine Arts, Sydney.

Paul has had twenty solo exhibitions and shown in over forty group exhibitions. In 1997 Higgs was awarded the Campbelltown Art Prize after having previously received a residency in Paris at the Art Gallery of New South Wales' studio and the New South Wales Travelling Art Scholarship.

He is extensively represented in public collections, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Artbank, Campbelltown City Art Gallery, New England Regional Art Museum, Newcastle Regional Art Gallery, The Australian Club, Wollongong City Art Gallery, Wollongong University Collection, Leeuwin Estate Winery WA and private collections in Australia, the United Kingdom and Norway. Paul Higgs will have his fourth solo exhibition with Stella Downer Fine Art in 2011.

Andrew Davis

Andrew Davis is an up an coming artist, who loves to experiment and look at the different aspects of an artwork, by a way of explanation of how he works, we quote his CV "I have very little education. I paint what I feel more than what I see. I take a camera everywhere I go and snap anything that catches my eye. I also collect images from magazines/internet. I then construct what I see in my mind (as best I can) using whatever medium/technique that seems to suit that particular subject."

David Dolahenty

David is a well know supporter of the Arts Centre and its programme, he works principally in pastel and acrylics, drawing from and abstracting the landscape, he also externalises an internal world affording the viewer glimpses of what lies closer to home and heart.

Exhibiting 17 July - 4 September 2011

Miniatures XV

Exhibitions of miniature painting by local artists have been a regular feature on the Arts Centre exhibition program for almost two decades. In recent years, the concept has been extended to include other artistic disciplines with embroidery, photography, sculpture and ceramics being added. The guidelines given to the artists for this exhibition are based on the Australian Society of Miniature Painters rules which state that the actual artwork should not measure more than 10 cm on any side and that the subject should be miniaturised. Artists were given free reign regarding subject matter, choice of medium, technique and style.

Diversions & Miniatures XV open 6.00pm Saturday 16th July 2011

and continue until Sunday 4th September 2011

Free artist's talk - Sunday 17 July 2011 at 11.00am
Ivor Fabok  |  Paul Higgs   |  Kevin Norton   |  Dave Teer
As part of the Arts Centres ongoing programme around meeting the artists who exhibit in the Centre we are proud to present and artist's talk by the four artists represented in the Continuous Conversation Exhibition. This show which is extremely diverse in the content it presents to the viewing public will be complemented by the artists being present on the Sunday morning immediately following the opening night of the exhibition. This will afford the viewing public yet another opportunity to meet with the artists on a one on one basis in an informal conversation and also to hear the artists explain their methodologies around ways of working especially in a large group. No bookings are required.
Education Officer's News

Roger SkinnerThe muswellbrook regional arts centre is pleased to announce the appointment of Roger Skinner as the Education Officer. Roger's role will be to expand the virtual footprint of the Arts Centre, he will be out visiting educational institutions at all levels, service clubs and corporate organisations asking what the Arts Centre can do for them. Roger will also be hosting and resourcing workshops at the Arts Centre and further abroad, and examining and pursuing means by which to put the Muswellbrook Shire Art Collection to work, we welcome Roger into this challenging, dynamic and exciting new role in the Arts Centre team.

Upcoming Events!!

Driven To Abstraction (working title) Roger is proposing a series of workshops early 2012 with a number of Sydney based artists which will take the form of an initial discussion using works from the Shire Collection to begin to discuss the notion of abstraction, this will then be followed by a number of practical sessions in the field, painting with the tutors with the resulting works being shown at the Arts Centre commencing in April 2012. Roger is seeking funding opportunities around this idea. Accordingly, Roger would be interested to hear from all local artists who would be interested in participating as the numbers interested are critical to the success of the workshops.
Please ring Roger on 6549 3769 or email roger.skinner@muswellbrook.nsw.gov.au

I've Been Framed!

At the first of a series of in gallery workshops Roger will be presenting a workshop on how to frame your work. This has been generated by a desire to encourage local artists to go to the next level in terms of how they present their work not only to the Arts Centre but further afield. Roger will discuss choice of matt type and colour and also address how to present work that will show the artist as being professional in their outlook towards exhibiting their work. Dates for this workshop are to announced soon, and Roger as ever, aware of the customer's needs, would like to determine which days were best to run such workshops and would be interested in your feedback. Please phone 6549 3769 or email roger.skinner@muswellbrook.nsw.gov.au
