Rhondda Walters donation |
Following her successful exhibition 'Journey' at the Arts Centre in June & July of this year well known Lower Hunter artist Rhondda Walters has donated one of the major pieces from the exhibition to the Muswellbrook Shire Art Collection. The diptych entitled 'From the People of Cappadocia I & II' will be featured in an exhibition of recent acquisitions to be held at the Arts Centre next year. This generous gift by the artist continues the tradition of donations to the Collection by practising artists and is a much appreciated addition to the Arts Centre's holdings of works by significant regional artists of the Hunter. |
Peter Gill |
Much loved curator and gallery director Peter Gill has retired from the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre after dedicating almost 25 years to the arts community of the Upper Hunter.
Peter was the Director of the Muswellbrook Regional Art Gallery from 1986 to 1999 and Arts Centre Curator at the Regional Arts Centre from 2000 to earlier this year. Peter began his career as an Aboriginal artefacts conservator at the Australian Museum, joined the Art Gallery Of NSW and then returned to his hometown to take up the post of Director.
Peter will now focus on practicing his art and we look forward to him exhibiting at the Arts Centre. |
Youth Snaps 2010 |
Following on from the success of the recent Youth Snaps 2010, and the overall success of Youth Snaps during the past 5 years, Upper Hunter Community Services has just completed Youth Snaps Extension. This project built upon the photographic skills previous Youth Snaps participants have gained and provided a continuation of learning, with Roger Skinner providing tuition.
Youth Snaps Extension also focused toward supporting participants entry into the 2010 Muswellbrook Local Arts Award. The Esther Bellis Prize is specifically awarded to young people 12 - 18 years of age. Youth Snaps Extension was open to participants of 2009 and 2010 Youth Snaps and included a field trip to the Wash Pools, Towarri National Park, with tuition in portraiture and landscape. This was followed by an assessment, feedback and selection process to help support the participants enter the Local Art Awards. Congratulations to Alvin Singleton who won 2nd Prize in the Esther Bellis Youth.

Offenbach - Down Under |
The Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre again had the pleasure of hosting an evening of Opera last July 24th. In what is becoming a regular and much anticipated night on the Arts Centre calendar, Blue Bottle Productions, with Scott Blick as Director presented Offenbach Down Under: featuring excerpts from some of Jacques Offenbach's well known operas and the Australian premiere in English of his short chamber opera Pepito. Pepito, a comic look at love gone awry was reinterpreted into a small town Australian setting just after WW11.
The enthusiastic crowd enjoyed wonderful performances featuring Soprano, Tenor and Baritone, with Piano accompaniment. The Arts Centre would like to thank the cast and crew, the organising committee, and the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music for making the night a great success, with funding from Arts NSW and NSW Dept of Education and Training.
