The Bridge Street footpath between William and Brook Street has been given a fresh new look! It is all part of a Masterplan for the Beautification and improvement of our CBD - and is one of a number of improvement opportunities identified by the community in the
CBD Strategic Plan.

This plan recognises that a well presented town fosters pride in the community, encourages increased patronage, and is attractive to new businesses and residents. The aim is to revitalise and improve the Muswellbrook CBD for the long term benefit of the community - and Council will undertake further work to meet this aim on a prioritised basis as funds become available.
The existing footpath pavement was reaching the end of its economic life. It was becoming hazardous, requiring increased maintenance and regular repair work. This meant that regardless of any beautification intentions, a major upgrade was necessary. Council allocated a budget of $780,000 to satisfy both the need for this required upgrade, as well as meeting the Beautification needs of the CBD Strategic Plan.
The design integrates this section of the CBD with the recently upgraded public area around the ArtGallery and SimpsonPark. It also provides a footpath which meets the needs of those in wheelchairs or who use walking aids, and meets the requirements of the Australian Standards for access and mobility.

Multidisciplinary consultancy group 'Complete Urban Pty Ltd' were engaged for their extensive expertise in the design of public domain projects.
Brefni Excavation and Earthmoving Pty Ltd were contracted to undertake the construction work.
Management of this construction proved to be quite complex
as it involved the control of traffic, pedestrians, service adjustments, power outages, unforseen underground utilities, access issues and so forth. Council is particularly appreciative of the level of cooperation from the service authorities, particularly Energy Australia staff who were extremely accommodating.
In the spirit of ensuring a quality result for the CBD, a successful outcome was achieved with support from the adjoining business operators, the Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce, Construction Company Brefni Excavation and Earthmoving Pty Ltd, Energy Australia, Telstra, The Department of Attorney General and Australia Post.
Design work is currently underway for Stage 2 of the Beautification Works. This will focus on streetscape improvements to the southern entrance of Bridge St, including the subway and the William St roundabout. It will also provide for better pedestrian-crossing safety in lower Bridge Street.
