Rhondda Walters' Journey

Exhibiting 12th June - 25th July 2010

This selection of paintings has been curated from a selection of 7 of the 23 individual series created over the past 30 year period. Themes have been chosen and are drawn from the artist's experiences and travels to create a large range of variations utilising texture, different media, and colour combinations, on a myriad of surfaces.

Rhondda finds it to be the most stimulating experience to adopt an approach to the production of her work freely and with an open mind, utilising the shapes and forms suggested by reality. This has been an ongoing guiding force in her work over many
years and she is still excited and personally rewarded in her quest to discover "new worlds. Rhondda believes that "the best paintings are created without thought of result, selling or impressing" and that "To be a successful artist, as in life, one must have integrity."

Ceramics and Glass - Selected works from the Max Watters Collection
Richard Larter's "Mirror Painting No 2". Spp on canvas 1983. Max Watters Collection
Exhibition dates: 12th June - 5th September 2010

This selection of works is the third in an ongoing series of special theme exhibitions aimed at presenting examples of some of the many choices of mediums available to artists for the production of their work. Previously we have looked at Steel and Wood. This time round, we also look at some of the shared aspects of ceramics and glass. A number of 2D works have been included in the selection to reinforce the theme.

The examples on show explore the play of light on the surface and how an illusion of depth or movement is achieved by the featured artists.

Artists featured include George Barker, Barwell, Dorothy Burns, Setsuko Ogishi, Caroline Southcombe, Ray Taylor, Allan Bell, Brian Doar, Lorraine Jenyns, Fiona Fell, Phyllis Delves, Richard Larter, Alison Hodges and Peter Masters.

Youth Snaps
is a series of photographic workshops for young people, held as part of Youth
Week celebrations over 3 Saturdays in April. This year's Youth Snaps was completed by 6 participants aged 12 - 16 years.

The participants were Sam Dennis, Alvin Singleton, Ellie Thomson, Stephanie Wiseman, Cody
Wright and Jessie-Lee Wright. This year is the fifth Youth Snaps exhibition.

Youth Snaps workshops were facilitated by local photographer, Roger Skinner. This involved a
tutorial session, a field trip to Widden, and an assessment and reflection session from which the
current exhibition was selected. A visit to the exhibition is highly recommended.

Youth Snaps is coordinated by Upper Hunter Community Services Youth Development Project,
in partnership with the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre, with financial assistance from
Muswellbrook Shire Council's Youth Week funding.

Previous Youth Snaps were conducted using disposable cameras. This year, Youth Snaps was
able to explore digital photography.

Thank you and congratulations to all the participants.

For the past few years the Arts Centre has featured work from the St Heliers Correctional Centre for this annual display. This time round the exhibition will include new work by the current group of artists and
with the benefit of recently being able to see works in progress, some different themes are becoming apparent. Again there is the usual stylized Australian animal motifs for which we are all familiar. The appearance of decorative inserts of bands of native flora as well as personal elements drawn from the artists' traditional family group, memory and history are breakthrough features. The manipulation of mediums is also more refined and some of the artists have developed and modified their implements to achieve different painting effects. This exhibition will be shown in the Wollemi Gallery of the Arts Centre.

Opera in July - Pepito

Scott Blick. Photo by Kellie Tym
The Arts Centre and the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music in collaboration with Scott Blick and Blue Bottle Productions will be hosting an evening of opera on Saturday 24th July. The concert will
consist of excerpts from some of Jacques Offenbach's better known operas in the first half followed by a performance of Pepito, one of his chamber operas which has never been performed in Australia before. It is a farce about love during times of war and has been reset in a small Australian country town in 1945 at the
end of WW2. Scott and the three performers have been rehearsing in the Netherlands for the performance. This will be a must see event.
