An Emerging Community of Practice...
This event is designed for those professionals who are curious about:
--developing a better understanding of and effectively responding to conflict and its impact in complex healthcare organizations
--approaches for addressing the ethical, psychological and organizational implications of providing health services
--identifying ways to address the quality of healthcare work environments; and
--the link between conflict engagement in the clinical setting and healing work.
Professionals who have attended past events have included representatives from the fields of: healthcare, patient safety, dispute resolution, ethics, psychology, communications, law, education and the arts.
This event will be most attractive to those who are committed to participating in a community of likeminded people dedicated to advancing these areas of endeavor on an ongoing basis. Participants who will most benefit from this program are those who typically engage in the world through: open inquiry, curiosity, and self-reflection; who attend to emerging patterns, question the status quo, who appreciate the power of thinking together and who embrace improvisation.
"Communities
of practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for
something they do and they learn how to do it better as they interact
regularly." - Etienne Wenger

format for this event is structured dialogue, guided discussion and
brainstorming. Through conversations guided by questions and
facilitated by thought leaders and conflict engagement specialists,
participants will navigate the complex issues facing healthcare
organizations using the transformative model of intention, attention,
practice and support.
The program structure includes time for personal renewal, outdoor hikes, informal networking, and open space.

Program Overview
Transforming healthcare organizations in order to improve patient
safety and cultivate healthy work environments requires intention,
attention, practice and support.
This think tank and dialogue marks the
inaugural event for EHCCO- an emerging community of practice focused on
transforming healthcare organizations through conflict engagement,
collaborative practices, and social learning.
For over a decade,
a growing number of professionals have been working in and with health
care organizations to address conflict and disruptive behaviors in
order to improve the safety of patient care and the quality of clinical
work environments. A great deal of expertise and insight has been
derived from their experience.
With the introduction of the 2009
Joint Commission leadership standards requiring leaders to attend to
conflict and disruption, the time has come to combine the collective
wisdom of this growing community of practitioners, educators and
researchers to promote and disseminate knowledge and best practices.
A
structure is needed to support and connect those with this expertise
with those who are seeking to better understand and respond to the need
for improved capacity for conflict engagement and accountable behaviors
in health care organizations. Thus, EHCCO has been launched.

Location: Costanoa Eco-adventure Resort
-on the Northern California coast near Half Moon Bay, California
The location for this event has been intentionally selected to incorporate the vision of EHCCO as providing a holistic approach to engagement - integrating intellectual challenge, physical well-being, and personal growth.
This body/mind/spirit approach to our programs requires that we utilize physical spaces that provide opportunities for quiet reflection, physical rejuvenation, and reconnecting with nature.
With great respect for the pristine natural surroundings and exquisite care given to the design of the guest lodge and cabins, meeting spaces and restaurant, Costanoa has been created to give people a rarified place to retreat from the intensity of everyday life and
rediscover the rhythm of nature...and oneself.

Objective & Outcomes
What sets this event apart from other conferences you have attended is the integral part you will play in shaping the objectives and informing the outcomes that will catalyze profound change - within your organization, in the field of healthcare, and in the world at large.
Our program planners have created some objectives and outcomes to serve as a starting point, however, much of our program will emerge from the interests, ideas and expertise of the program participants. Objectives: 1. Introduce the concept of a community of practice and the foundation that has already been established for this emerging community. 2. Define what we mean by intention, attention, practice and support as a transformative model for healthcare organizations. 3. Develop a strategy to disseminate conflict engagement tools and resources to address emerging mandates and calls from the public for healthcare reform. 4. Examine the link between disruptive behavior and lack of capacity for conflict engagement among healthcare leaders. 5. Solidify the link between personal and organizational resilience and the need for effective conflict engagement practices as a means of improving patient safety as well as personal well being of health professionals. 6. Acknowledge the current national context in which conflict management practices are being considered. Outcomes:1. Compile useful approaches for addressing the new Joint Commission leadership standards for conflict management from those who have been practicing as conflict engagement specialists for over a decade. 2. Identify next steps for supporting the growth of a community of practice and inspiring pursuit of disseminated communities of practice in environments in which we work. 3. Create recommendations for providing training and/or other methods for building conflict competent organizations. 4. Provide a space for personal renewal, reflection and an opportunity to think together with likeminded professionals. 5. Produce a final report from the dialogue and share with all attendees. |

Inquiry into Change
The following dialogue questions are a sampling of the ideas we will explore together...
|
What inspires you to pursue the application of the "community of practice" concepts?
What does a "transformed" healthcare environment look like?
What are the most effective ways to educate the "skeptics" or the uninformed?
Healthcare stakeholders are now showing an interest in addressing conflict engagement more deliberately and constructively. How do we capitalize on this openness? How do we support a commitment to actually walk the talk?
How
does the current level of fatigue and lack of well-being among health
professionals contribute to conflict and disruptive behavior?
What is your most effective technique in engaging others to think in ways that are initially "foreign" to them?
What information, training, or experiences bring credibility to practitioners who want to further this work in healthcare?
What are the three most important things that you can do to influence changes in the larger realm of healthcare?
What can be done to restore the work environment as a means of preventing conflict escalation? Although we live in a culture that tends to perceive either a threatening or negative spin to conflict, there are compelling positive dimensions to conflict and conflict engagement. How do we create conditions for the positive dimensions to emerge?

A Personal Invitation...
|
Thank you for considering EHCCO's inaugural event!
EHCCO has been formed to cultivate an interprofessional community of practice dedicated to transforming healthcare organizations as a means of improving the safety of patient care, the quality of work environments, and to promote healing, our common purpose. As a community of practice, we emphasize a sense of belonging combined with open inquiry to support learning among individuals and groups.
Most profoundly, we emphasize ongoing curiosity linked to consistent practice as a means of improving our approaches to conflict and disruption in complex environments - leading contributors to unsafe care and unhappy professionals.
The culture of healthcare is in transition and there is a genuine opportunity to guide the emerging culture toward a preferred future. We have spent decades working in and with healthcare organizations and we are committed to using our knowledge, expertise and compassion to help transform how we engage with patients, their families, and our colleagues.
We invite you to come with us on this journey. Whether you are newly interested in this area of endeavor or you are an experienced professional who has worked with us over the years, you are encouraged to join in as we mark the turning point - the emergence of the "new normal."
Through connection to our common purpose; integrative thinking; better conflict engagement; and an emphasis on community, we can improve patient care, restore work environments and reconnect to meaningful work.
We can return hope to healthcare.
I welcome your participation in this event and in the years to come...
Warm Regards,
Debra Gerardi President & Chief Creative Officer EHCCO
