Dear Friend of FLD,

Early September always marks the transition period between Summer and Fall here in the Finger Lakes.  We hit a little lull as people get back into the routine of school and work.  The break is short-lived as we are on the verge of a busy Fall here at FLD.  Harvest is underway, the leaves begin to change, and we head into one of the most beautiful seasons for our region.

Last month, I wrote about some expansion plans here at the distillery, in terms of both new markets and additional facilities and equipment.  Read about our next project  here.

We're happy to report our product launches in New Jersey and Illinois have gone well. Please join us in Chicago for the Indy Spirits Expo on Sept 28. We should also be announcing our arrival in the Pennsylvania market in the very near term.

There are some great events coming up over the next month, including:

- Next Tuesday, The Aurora Inn on Cayuga Lake is hosting a Farm Dinner using ingredients exclusively from the Finger Lakes. They are pairing each course with local wines and the dessert course with our Cherry Liqueur.

- On September 22, we'll be pouring with other NYS spirit producers at NYC Brewer's Choice held at City Winery.

- On Sunday, September 25, McKenzie Rye cocktails will be poured at Landmark Feast, an outdoor farm dinner at the Arthur Ross Terrace at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC.

- We are also scheduling a number of tastings at NYS liquor stores (see sidebar).

Please come out to visit us at one of these venues, or come right to the source - we'd love to host you here at the distillery sometime this Fall.

Best regards,

Brian McKenzie
President, Finger Lakes Distilling

building plans

Last month, we informed you about our new tasting space and enhancements to our milling operation.  We hope to break ground on the next phase of our facility planning in the next few weeks.  We will be constructing a new building adjacent to our existing space that will more than double our production square footage.  The new building will be used primarily for warehousing and bottling. It will be situated just to the west of our main building and we hope to complete construction by the end of this year.

Last month we hosted our good friends from Brooklyn Brine for a visit at our facility and an evening of fun on Keuka Lake.  They enjoyed a little reprieve from the heat of the City and it allowed us to cement our relationship as 2 companies working together that share common philosophies - commitment to using high quality, local ingredients, and using handcrafted methods to create products we can truly be passionate about.

The visit also led to another product collaboration - Bourbon & Maple Bread & Butter Pickles. This creation is already on the market and will be available at the distillery starting next week.

We look forward to more opportunities to work with these quality people (maybe we'll get them up on the wakeboard next time, too!).

In case you missed it....

Esteemed spirits writer, Geoffrey Kleinman, recently evaluated 20 white whiskies on his blog, drinkspirits.com and claims that our Glen Thunder Corn Whiskey is "by far, our favorite unaged whiskey on the market."

We had a great visit with Kristin Harmel recently. Kristin is a dynamic writer/TV personality and  gave an enthusiastic report of her visit to the Finger Lakes on the Daily Buzz in 3 separate segments. She and the anchors seemed to really enjoy our Cherry Liqueur.

Our good friend, Frank Coleman, of the Distilled Spirits Council gave a tour of his office on ABC News and gave a nice plug to our McKenzie Rye.

We continued our blog piece about the production of McKenzie Bourbon...from the ground up.

Finally, check out the great photographs of our Rye & Rhubarb cocktail on photographer Rich Brainerd's blog, 2eat2drink.

Starting to think Fall with this month's cocktails. Love the new Black Walnut bitters from Fee's that inspired this one...

 Black Walnut Manhattan

black walnut manhattan

2 oz. McKenzie Bourbon
1 oz. Cardamaro
(a wine-based Amaro. you could use a standard Vermouth, but this made for an amazing cocktail)
3-4 dashes Fee Bros Black Walnut Bitters
Orange peel for garnish

Add Bourbon, Cardamaro and bitters to shaker. Shake over ice and strain into martini glass. Garnish with orange peel.

Ode to Fellini

ode to fellini

This cocktail was developed by Beverly at Stella's - a wonderful cocktail bar in Collegetown, Ithaca. While grappa is not a spirit that is commonly used in cocktails, we think you'll love how the floral/herbaceous notes of our grappa pairs with the nuttiness of the tawny port and the perfect level of sweetness.

1 oz. FLD Gewurztraminer Grappa
1.5 oz Tawny Port
0.5 oz St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur
2 Dashes Fee Bros. Rhubarb Bitters
Lemon Peel for garnish

Add top four ingredients to glass, add ice and stir. Strain into cocktail glass and garnish with lemon peel.

Please send us your ideas for cocktails using our products. With your permission, we may feature your cocktail in a future newsletter. If selected, we'll send you an FLD hat or T-shirt.
