New Products

red jacket

We recently added a small commercial refrigerator to our tasting room to make some new products available. Grab some cold bottled water to quench your thirst on the wine trail or some chilled mixers if a cocktail is in your immediate future.

We also are offering some unbelievable juice products from our friends at Red Jacket Orchards. Joe's Summer Blend makes an amazing cocktail with a bit of FLD Pear Brandy.

Dear Friend of FLD,

Summer was off to such a great start - beautiful weather, bustling crowds - and then we got such tragic news last week. Deb Whiting, Chef and Co-owner of Red Newt Winery & Bistro was in a fatal car crash on June 30. Please read our tribute to Deb here.

Deb was such a great promoter of the Finger Lakes region, so we pledge to do our best to rally with other local businesses to continue her work. For us at FLD, that means making high quality spirits that keep people coming back for more.

We've got a new batch of Vintner's Vodka on the shelf that is selling like hotcakes. It has a hint of grape character like previous batches, but is a bit more neutral, making it more versatile for your summer cocktails. Try it in the Strawberry Smash below.

We've decided to extend our Friday hours during the month of July, so stop by on your way to the lake to stock up on your weekend provisions.

We're also pouring every Friday night this month at Union Square Wines from 6-9 (Fluid Fridays), in addition to some other great tastings throughout the state.

Please come out to see us!

Blog it like it's hot...

It's back.  The Finger Lakes Distilling Blog  is being updated regularly.  New employee, Adrienne Zable, recently added 3 new postings to our blog including a feature on our tasting room staff and their cocktail recommendations for 4th of July.

Stay tuned in for her new series, "From the Ground Up"... featuring each step of the production process and inspirational quotes from our very own, Thomas Earl.

In Memory of Deb Whiting

deb

article3It is with great sadness that we share the news with you about the loss of an energetic woman, innovative chef and icon here on Seneca Lake.  On June 30th, Debra Whiting passed away after a tragic car accident while returning home from a trip to Vermont with her husband David.  Dave survived the accident.

If you have ever visited the Red Newt Bistro, you've experienced Deb's creative spin on local cuisine paired with local wines. Knowing her as a person, was an even more delectable experience.

Deb was active locally as one of the founders of the Finger Lakes Culinary Bounty, served as PTO President and Watkins Glen Area Chamber President, all while running the Bistro. Beyond Schuyler County, she was featured in the reality television show, Chopped, which has yet to air.

Deb was a great supporter of FLD, even though she admitted to not being much for spirits. She utilized our liqueurs in her cooking and always included us in events in which she was involved.

We asked Deb to prepare some appetizers for an event we hosted at the distillery during our opening month of July 2009. Of course, the food was amazing and our guests left impressed. After bugging Deb several times for our bill, I still never got an invoice. I gave up after a few months, and though she never said anything, I got the impression that she was hoping to help us succeed in a small way. I sensed that she knew what it was like to be starting a small business and that her gesture would have an impact and be appreciated. It certainly was.

Deb will be greatly missed.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dave and her two sons, Ryan and Brenton. Please join us in donating to the Food Bank in Deb's memory and also participating in the Two for the Newt idea proposed by our friend Michael Warren Thomas.

In case you missed it....

Not too much to report this month, though you should be seeing some very prominent mentions about FLD in local and national press in the coming months.

We had a great visit with the Happy Hour guys a week or so ago. Stay tuned for their upcoming episode featuring the distillery.

We also showed up in the Rochester City Newspaper.
