Bourbon Barrel Foods

We recently linked up with a small gourmet foods producer out of Kentucky called Bourbon Barrel Foods. They specialize in incorporating the unique flavors associated with Bourbon into a variety of seasonings and sweeteners. We offer their Bourbon Smoked Salt ($10), Bourbon Smoked Sugar ($13), and Mint Julep Sugar ($13).

Dear Friend of FLD,

We're gearing up for what hopes to be a very exciting season in the Finger Lakes. We've already seen an uptick in visitors and can't wait to see what some good weather will do to bring people out.

Bourbon Batch #4 is out and may be the tastiest yet. It's here just in time for our  upcoming Kentucky Derby party. You won't want to miss this event, so call to reserve your spot today.

We continue to ramp up our whiskey production. Just this week, we started implementing a more sophisticated grain handling system that includes our new 5 Ton grain bin. We thought we'd name her Cornelia (can you guess what grain it will hold?).

In addition to all the regular distillery activity, May will be very hectic with a number of tastings and events going on all over the state. Check out our Upcoming Tastings section for events near you.

Hope to see you at the distillery soon!

2nd Annual Bourbon & Derby Party

Scheduled for May 7

  thomas - jockey

Giddy up. Tickets to our second annual Kentucky Derby Party went on sale last week. This is one of the best FLD events of the year. The event kicks off at 5:30 with some great food and cocktails prepared by the Stonecat Cafe.  We'll have live music from the Djug Django Trio and regular tastings of FLD products. The big race will be shown live and then we'll conclude the evening with bourbon balls and tours of our facility by the man pictured above (when not competing in horse races, he spends his time running the still at FLD).

Tickets are $50 per person and you must order soon! We are limited to 100 attendees and last day of ticket sales will be Monday, May 2. The event sold out well in advance last year.

You can order your tickets by calling the distillery anytime during regular business hours - 11 am to 5 pm. We will reserve your spot with credit card payment.

Hope you can join us!

In case you missed it....

We were thrilled to be mentioned in a recent Wall Street Journal article about artisinal white whiskies.  Kevin Sintumuang's piece, "White is the New Brown", which had some good things to say about our Glen Thunder Corn Whiskey.

The explosion of craft vodka was explored in a recent issue of Saveur. Our own Vintner's Vodka was mentioned and put to use in a tasty sounding cocktail, the Vintner's Fizz.

Drinking Made Easy contributor, Blair Phillips, dropped by a few weeks ago to see our operation and taste our popular Maplejack Liqueur. He wrote about his experience in his article, "Maplejack: Not Your Grandma's Liqueur, Unless Your Grandma's a Lumberjack". What a title!

We also had some really cool mentions in Maxim Magazine - Glen Thunder was featured in this month's article entitled "21st Century Moonshine" - and Details Magazine named McKenzie Bourbon one of America's Best New Whiskies.

Finally, our chocolatier, Christian, had some great press in our local media. He continues to make some amazing chocolate for us that is available for sale in our tasting room.

Spring is here...kind of. Our cocktails for this month provide a great transition as we move into some warmer temps while coping with the April showers.

Italian Screwdriver

grappa cocktail

2 oz. FLD Grappa (we used Gewurztraminer)
1 oz. Aperol
Juice from 1/4 orange
Club soda
Orange peel for garnish

Combine grappa and Aperol in rocks glass with ice. Squeeze quartered orange into glass and top with club soda mixing all ingredients together. Garnish with orange peel.

Vintner's Rosemary Martini

  rosemary martini
2.5 oz. Vintner's Vodka
1 ounce rosemary simple syrup (see instructions below)
1/4 oz. fresh lemon juice
Lemon peel for garnish

Prepare rosemary simple syrup by boiling 2 cups water and adding 1 cup sugar and fresh rosemary sprigs. After cooling simple syrup, mix top 3 ingredients in shaker. Shake over ice and pour into chilled martini glass. Garnish with lemon peel.

Please send us your ideas for cocktails using our products. With your permission, we may feature your cocktail in a future newsletter. If selected, we'll send you an FLD hat or T-shirt.
