Dear Friend of FLD,

Labor Day is nearly here. Pretty soon I'll start hearing my pop say, "Better enjoy.  It's the last nice weekend of the summer." We hear this every year.  Usually we laugh and roll our eyes because some of the best of the Finger Lakes is yet to come.  Local wineries will be busy with this season's grape harvest, the leaves will be perfect for peeping (for those of you not in-the-know, that means looking at leaves), and our busy fall season will be underway!

I do have to agree with my dad to some extent - it is sad to see summer's warm evenings fade.  That's why we are planning to heat up this fall with our first-ever cigar and spirits pairing. This "BY INVITE ONLY" event will feature handmade cigars, local cuisine, and of course, FLD cocktails. FLD customers will receive their invitations next week by email.

We also have several great events this month, so be sure to check our events listing on the sidebar. Next weekend, we'll be pouring our whiskey at a Fashion Week event in NYC hosted by Vogue Food Critic Jeffrey Steingarten. Come sample artisan whiskies paired with specialties prepared by celebrity chef David Chang of Momofuku. On September 24, join us at the Silver Fox Steakhouse in Ellicottville, NY for a multi-course dinner paired with Finger Lakes Distilling spirits.

See you in September and thanks for reading.

Sincerely,
Brian McKenzie

1st Annual Cigar & Cocktail Pairing

We are very excited to be hosting our first cigar tasting event at the distillery.

Each guest will receive 3 handmade cigars as selected by Brown's Cigar Store in Corning.  While you are busy figuring out which smoke to light up, Felicia's Atomic Lounge  will be mixing up cocktails to enhance your cigar experience.  There will be lots of food and great music too.  Relax and enjoy a beautiful fall evening overlooking Seneca Lake.

BY INVITE ONLY
(Invitations to FLD Customers will be emailed next week)
FLD is Headed to Mt. Vernon

Here's something they don't teach you in history class: George Washington was, at one time, the largest commercial distiller in America.  That's right, in 1797 Washington began distilling at his farm near Mt. Vernon.  By 1799, right before his death, he was making 11,000 gallons of whiskey, annually.

In 2006, after several years of research and development, George Washington's distillery was reconstructed and restored to resemble what it may have looked like 200 years before. SInce that time, tours have been available to the public and the stills have been put into production once a year.

While the distillery was primarily used in whiskey production, other products were also manufactured.  This year the facility will be opened to create a small batch of peach brandy, a spirit that was very common during Washington's time. We're thrilled to report that FLD will be a part of this momentous occasion.

We have been asked to lead the distillation along with 2 other U.S. distillers.  We'll be traveling down this October, staying on the grounds of Mt. Vernon, using the replica stills to produce the distillate, and celebrating at a gala affair to raise money for the educational programs at Mt. Vernon.

We're honored to be a part of this project and will keep you posted on how things go through our blog and next month's newsletter.

Here's to George for leading the way in our country's rich distilling history (amongst some other accomplishments, of course)!
