The Christ Church Community Update
Friday, September 30, 2011

Whoever you are, and wherever you
find yourself on the journey of faith, you are welcome at Christ
Church, as you are, to receive the blessings of God so freely given.

Friends:
St. Francis of Assisi is, as the prayerbook says, the most admired of saints yet the least imitated. This Sunday afternoon October 2 we remember his compassion, charity and embrace of all God's creatures in a special Evensong at 5 PM. In the spirit of Francis, the phrase "Whoever you are on the journey of faith. . . ." includes our dogs, cats, pet rats, snakes, goldfish, hamsters, who are welcome in the service (using your best discretion) At 4:30 PM, we will bless and share a sort of pet's communion with all pets in the North Garden.
In the Evensong service, St. Francis' Canticle of the Sun, set to music by American composer Seth Bingham, will be offered by the Christ Church Choir, joined by the Delaware Choral Society Chamber Choir.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday evening, October 4 and 5, we begin our fall Christian Formation classes.
On Tuesday, at 7 PM, the class I am presenting with parishioner Walt Lowe (who is also a retired professor of systematic theology) explores the irony of modernism's desire to discover a "historical Jesus" as opposed to the "apocalyptic (or hidden) Jesus" of scripture and traditional theology. The goal of the class is to better equip ourselves for serious theological reflection demanded by our complex political times and how better to serve God's vision of the world as it "ought" to be, rather than react to world as it "is" with a weak moral relativism. Sign up with for the class here.
On Wednesdays, Kate Spelman leads a class exploring worship and using the Book of Common Prayer in daily life. The class convenes at 5:30 PM, making it convenient for those dropping off kids for the Children's Choir on Wednesday evenings. Sign up with for the class here.
At 7 PM each Wednesday, we have evening worship, with Parker and Kate leading using new prayers and music that explore the diversity of Anglican worship.
New to Christ Church? Join me in the three-week Life at Christ Church class this Sunday, October 2, at 12:30 PM.
Christ Church is a fully inclusive community, embracing equally all of God's children regardless of sexual orientation, welcomes all families, advocates for nondiscrimination law in church and state and celebrates same sex blessing ceremonies. Learn more with our members of the LGBT community, and their allies, this Sunday at a festive brunch that will welcome and greet Kate Spelman! RSVP here.
As we enter the season when we make our financial pledges to Christ Church for 2012, I urge us all to bring our 2011 pledges up to date. You may check your pledge balance at our secure, member only website, as well as make online payments.
