The Christ Church Community Update
For Sunday, January 24, 2010
Whoever you are, and wherever you find yourself on the journey of faith, you are welcome at Christ Church, as you are, to receive the blessings of God so freely given.
Greetings!

I am very grateful that the Christ Church community contributed more than $4000 to the Haiti relief effort through Episcopal Relief and Development.  As I wrote last week, there are many good ways to support the people of Haiti, and giving through ER-D is an excellent way to get your financial resources quickly used.

After contributing on the ER-D website, one parishioner wrote to me:  "I am thrilled to hear that Episcopalians are making a difference on the ground in Haiti.   I am thrilled that our church, which means much to me, is on the ground and doing what can be done and efficiently."

We will continue to collect contributions for Episcopal Relief and Development this Sunday, and I certainly commend a direct donation through their website.  Learn the latest news about the Episcopal Church working in Haiti here.

Our mission concerns must be both local and global.  I am grateful that 30 parishioners are now tutoring at the Charter High School nearby Christ Church at 7th and Sansom (more volunteers are needed, more info here).  This Sunday, in the Rector's Forum at 10:10 AM, we'll hear from parishioners Joe Hetrick and Joanne Kundrat and parishioners from St. Peter's who traveled to Guatemala in November to paint and refurbish a school in a poor barrio of Guatemala City.  The current crisis in Haiti reminds us all that we cannot wait for a natural disaster to reveal the conditions that our neighbors live in, be they near or far.  The next trip to Guatemala is being planned, and if you have interest in ministering in this important way, please attend Sunday.

Susan Richardson and I have been reading the materials and listening to the recordings of the 55 gifted church organists and musicians who have asked to be considered as our next Director of Music.  Please join Susan and me Saturday morning, January 23, 8:30 AM, for a simple breakfast, followed by a morning prayer service at which we will ask God's blessings and guidance on our search as we shortly develop a list of finalists for the position.  We will be able to speak directly to the many questions of what skills and qualities that we are looking for in our next director of music.

I reported last week the Vestry's and my gratitude that we met revenue budgets and pledge income for 2009, and we were able to end 2009 with our budget in balance.  In this next week, pledgers and regular givers will be receiving their 2009 year-end charitable giving tax statements, as well as acknowledgement of their pledge for 2010.  If you have not yet made your 2010 pledge, please do so now.

Christ Church is a powerful instrument of God's grace and love, made possible by your faithful stewardship and generosity.

Faith and Family Series

Welcoming Children and Families:  What makes an Open Door?  When have you arrived some place with your children - anywhere from a family gathering, to a school or camp, to an amusement park - only to feel your child was misunderstood, misperceived, or unsupported? Our facilitator will be Priscilla Singleton, family counselor and director of the Paoli office of the Council for Relationships.

Update on the Search for the next Director of Music

Christ Church has received more than 50 applications from around the nation to be our next director of music.  Join Timothy Safford and Susan Richardson Saturday morning, January 23, 8:30 to 10 AM to pray for our search to be successful, to hear what we are learning from the applications, and discuss the future of worship at Christ Church.  Please RSVP to Cecilia Wagner.

Prayers for Pregnancy and Childbirth

On January 31 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in the Great Hall, there will be a quiet liturgy around the topic of pregnancy, safe childbirth or our memories of those things.  All are most welcome - certainly, those who are expecting, and their spouses, partners, friends, or other family members, but anyone who would simply like to join together in this special liturgy.
Valentine's Party at St. Barnabas Shelter

The afternoon of Sunday, February 7, the children, youth and families of Christ Church will host a Valentine's party at St. Barnabas Shelter at 60th and Girard.  Set-up at 1:00pm, party from 1:30-3:00pm, followed by clean-up.  Christ Church will provide ice-cream sundaes, games, and crafts, as we share community with the women and children of the shelter.  We need your help in this unique opportunity for children, youth, and parents to work together alongside those in need. We need volunteers (all friends and family welcome) to join us that day; and by February 4, we need donations of craft and face-painting materials, and ingredients for the ice-cream sundaes.  To donate or participate, please contact the Rev. Susan Richardson.
A new way to make a financial commitment to Christ Church

For many people at Christ Church, they are facing financial uncertainty and are unable to make a year long-pledge to Christ Church.  Still, all members will be helpful and good stewards of Christ Church if they make known to the Vestry their expected financial support to Christ Church.

Parishioners have asked, "Can I make a commitment for a shorter period of time?"  The answer is "yes."  It may make sense to make a financial pledge between now and May 31st, or June 30th.

As well, several parishioners have asked to have their financial gifts made through one-time or recurring gifts from their bank account, debit card or credit card.  Christ Church has a new, secure system for its members to set up gifts that are made on a specific schedule, with a specific ending date.

To make your financial commitment for 2010, or to set up gifts from a bank account, debit card or credit card, please visit our Stewardship webpage.
