Greetings!
"Are you preparing your students for their future or your past?" -Lynn T. Ochs
I love this time of year.  There is nothing more exciting to me that the opportunity for a new and fresh perspective on life.  The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to re-examine your classroom, personal professional development goals, and the needs of your students.
I challenge you to ask yourself, "What AM I preparing my students for in their lives?".   Are you targeting the literacy, math, computer and general knowledge and life skills that will help your students lead productive and independent lives after they leave school?  Are you exploring assistive technology and other tools that will support the goals you have for your students?
Our team is here to help you answer these questions and meet these challenges!  Let us know how we can help you prepare your students for their future!
Sincerely,
The OATC Gang

 Website Wowzers!
aacIf you have access to a net book or tablet computer and want to explore an inexpensive way to create a dynamic display augmentative communication device, you should play around with the free Web Page Communicator.  This ingenious program uses web browser software programs (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, or Opera) to run web pages with pictures and sound.  You can even set the pages up for scanning!
Freeware
spelling citySpelling City offers FREE and "PREMIUM" (aka, Not-Free) activities that teach spelling, vocabulary, grammar and handwriting skills.  There are activities you can do on the computer and worksheets you can print for desk or home work.  If your student has difficulty with traditional methods of teaching and practicing vital spelling skills then this might be the website for you!
 Grab Bag
smellSmell can be one of our most powerful and underutilized senses in the classroom.  Kate Ahern has a nice article titled "Learning Through the Olfactory Sense".  It is packed with great ideas!  One that stood out to me is a link to instructions on how to make your own scented, rice heat pack.  This could be a great activity to make with your students for their own personal use and also as a possible fund raiser.  Scented Rice Heat Packs

No Tech Corner
cookie sheetDo you have a student who likes to tear things?  Maybe things like nice books and other student's papers and worksheets?  This very satisfying sensory activity can drive other people crazy and can also ruin important classroom materials.  Instead of trying to keep your terrific tear'er away from all your books and papers, try out this nifty idea.  Cover a cookie sheet with stickers, paper that is taped down and contact paper so your student can have a safe place to explore the oh so satisfying sound and feel of ripping.  Get all the details here: Demolition Derby

Wishing you all the best!
