| Greetings! |
Happy New Year! I hope you are recharged, refreshed, and ready to face the rest of the school year! We have two great trainings coming up that may get you excited about trying new things with your students. The first training is on February 7th & 8th, 2010, 9:00am - 4:00pm (yes, I know, the 7th is a Sunday), titled " Assistive Technology for a Successful Portfolio". Do you dread portfolio season like you do the flu season? Well, OATC has an assistive technology vaccination that might get you through the portfolio season feeling very successful! We are going to offer a 2-day assistive technology workshop for special education teachers who would like assistive technology ideas for portfolio activities. This workshop is only aimed at teachers with severe/profound students who are really struggling with how to teach their students the goals and objectives required in the portfolio process. Space is limited, it will take place at our OKC OATC office & the cost is FREE! For more information or to obtain a registration form, please email Sheryl Hazelbaker at sheryl-hazelbaker@ouhsc.edu.
The second training is on February 25, 2010, 9:00am - 4:00pm, titled "Success Stories." Success Stories are social stories which provide essential information paired with the most intense kind of visual support-video clips of the students themselves being successful. This powerful teaching tool is a combination of two research-validated strategies: video modeling and social stories. Success Stories can help teachers connect with their students, communicate clearly and effectively what the students need to know, and create true Success Stories out of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. This presentation will demonstrate how to use video stories to effectively teach appropriate behaviors, schedules/routines, language development, social skills, independent living skills and academic skills. This training will be presented by Jessica Roberts and will be held at the Lemley Campus of TTC in Tulsa. Note: There is a materials fee for this class of $15.00/participant. Each participant will receive a copy of the book: Success Stories: Using Video Stories to Connect, Communicate, and Create True Success with Your Students.
To register for this for Success Stories, please contact Chuck Roberts atchuck-roberts@ouhsc.edu.
Sincerely, The OATC Gang

Who doesn't like a good rubric?? A rubric can be an objective way to collect data on academic, vocational, and social skills. It can also be used to measure use of assistive technology tools during a trial. Check out Rubistar where you can create custom rubrics and/or use one of their creations.

Do you have a student or client who has trouble finding that 'left-click button'? It can be so frustrating to watch someone struggle to get the mouse to a certain spot on the screen, only to move the mouse while trying to left-click. Microsoft designer Mike LaManna was wearing his smart pants when he came up with the brilliantly simple idea of gluing a plastic ring onto the left click button. How simple!! Read more about his idea and get step by step instructions for modifying your computer mouse. Step By Step Instructions Happy Clicking!
