Activity of the Month

If you like reading blogs, you should check out this one, Teaching Learners With Multiple Special Needs.  The author of this blog, Kate Ahern, M.S.Ed., is someone I'd love to meet!  She consistently shares the most excellent ideas and resources.  The activity of the month is just one example.  Looking for adapted curriculum ideas to teach about our US government?  Then you will want to take a gander at this Unique Learning System - September Extensions - Government

WordtalkFor people with reading and writing difficulties, having text reinforced by hearing it read aloud can be very useful. Specialized programs have existed to do this for a long time, and in many cases are extremely helpful and highly appropriate and should be seriously considered, perhaps in consultation with professional advice where necessary.
WordTalk is a free  text-to-speech plugin developed for use with all versions of Microsoft Word (from Word 97 upwards). It will speak the text of the document and will highlight it as it goes. It contains a talking dictionary to help decide which word spelling is most appropriate.
Sitting neatly in your toolbar it is highly configurable, allowing you to:
Adjust the highlight colors
Change the voice and the speed of the speech
Convert text to speech and save as a .wav or .mp3 file so that it can be played back on an iPod or mp3 player.

Goodbye and Hello
2009 is shaping up to be a year of great changes.  Some good, some not so good.  We said goodbye to Lynda Crouch and Coeise Scott this summer.  Lynda is now working in Bixby Public Schools as their occupational therapist and assistive technology consultant.  Coeise took a position back in her hometown public school of Berryhill.  She will be working with pre-school students and their special education teachers and will also be providing speech-language pathology services throughout the district.  Camber Moulton will be home most of the fall taking care of her new baby!  Congratulations Camber!!  And starting in September, Amanda Porter is taking on a new role as Project Director of a federally funded grant on power mobility use with young children.  She will be working out of the OATC building, so in some respects, we don't really have to say goodbye.
We are pleased to introduce to you our newest AT consultant, Sheryl Hazelbaker!  Sheryl joins us from Mustang Public Schools and brings with her a trunk full of great ideas and experience working in the classroom.  We are excited to have her join our team! We do have an additional opening on our team for an energetic go-getter who is knowledgeable about assistive technology.  Please contact Stefanie Olson at stefanie-olson@ouhsc.edu for more information.  Or view the job description here: OUHSC Job Website

lockline
We LOVE Loc-Line.  What is Loc-Line you might ask???  It is a flexible, adjustable, modular hose system that can be used to create an inexpensive switch mount system.  We have a couple of these switch mount systems available to borrow through our equipment loan library. Linda Burkhart has a great handout on how to create your own Loc-Line switch mount system.  You can download the instructions here: Loc-Line Switch Mounts

Wishing you all the best!
