A few weeks ago, I wrote a column lamenting the dismal state of America's local public sector pensions system. For with some $3,000bn (or more) of unfunded liabilities, the maths looks truly alarming - particularly given the gridlock besetting so much of the American political machine.

For eight years the ALN has sounded the theme of improving livability, and recently the city has set a goal of being the most livable city in New England.  One factor in livability is how public safety and unforseen risks are managed.  Weather, a missing person, gridlock, or even a public shooting require that all available communication resources be used effectively between the authorities and the public. Read more...

Volunteer Opportunities

Newport relies on volunteers.  They are serving the city and its institutions all around town.  That's because we enjoy living in our wonderful city, seeing friends and neighbors, and contributing to the betterment of our lives in Newport.

The Alliance of a Livable Newport relies on volunteers and is currently seeking help from our neighbors in Newport.  We need your help on the writing and editing our newsletter, planning and running public forums, and building our membership.

If you have a few hours a month, and to want to become involved with people that are working hard for the City of Newport, contact the Volunteer Coordinator and we will be in touch about the ways you can become involved with the ALN.

Thanks for helping!

Currently we are looking for someone who may be interested in helping create a "Neighborhood Association Map" for the website: if interested contact:
