Government Accountability Town Hall Meeting with General Treasurer Gina Raimondo
The ALN held a town hall meeting with the General Treasurer of Rhode island, Gina Raimondo, on September 21, 2011, at the Newport CCRI campus. During her opening remarks, Treasurer Raimondo told the audience of approximately 80 people that next fiscal year Newport will have to pay $2.5 million more toward the state retirement fund than it is currently paying. The Fifth Annual ALN Financial Forum, "Financial Strain and the Discipline to Cope", was held on September 29, 2011 in the Reading Room at the Newport Public Library. Newport's Energy and Environment Committee

In June 2007, the Newport City Council created a Task Force charged to recommend best practices for the City in the reduction of global warming pollution, and to research and bring forward energy savings proposals for the City. Do you ever watch HGTV or Wheel of Fortune? If you do, you may have seen the results of the national advertising partnership between these television icons and Rebuilding Together. Rebuilding Together is a national organization of local chapters dedicated to providing Safe and Healthy Housing.

PELL SCHOOL UPDATE
Finding suitable avenues to control the cost overruns for the construction of the proposed $30 million Claiborne Pell Elementary School for Newport continues. Since late October when the construction bids came in about 20% over budget, the School Committee has replaced its construction manager, and the Building and School Committees have approved cuts in the plan to save about $3 million.

Volunteer Opportunites
Newport relies on volunteers. They are serving the city and its institutions all around town. That's because we enjoy living in our wonderful city, seeing friends and neighbors, and contributing to the betterment of our lives in Newport. The Alliance of a Livable Newport relies on volunteers and is currently seeking help from our neighbors in Newport. We need your help on the writing and editing our newsletter, planning and running public forums, and building our membership. If you have a few hours a month, and to want to become involved with people that are working hard for the City of Newport, contact the Volunteer Coordinator and we will be in touch about the ways you can become involved with the ALN.
