Newport City Council Strategic Plan
Beginning in the fall of 2010, the Newport City Council began an initiative to develop a strategic plan for the city. This project has built on the efforts by prior councils that spent considerable time studying the future challenges facing Newport and included assessments of our collective strengths and weaknesses.
Part of this planning initiative is driven by the professional acknowledgement that a strategic plan is essential for a city of our size. The Council realizes that most strategic investments for the City take anywhere from 2-10 years from concept to completion; the council's term is only for two years. A strategic plan provides for long-term continuity and for consistent direction for the city manager and staff. In 2009 Newport recognized the need to extend the planning horizon beyond the two-year election cycle and amended the City Charter, requiring the city to have a strategic plan (Sec 9-1).
The true value of a strategy lies in the process of developing it. The process is built on teamwork, information gathering, priority setting, decision making and implementation.
Developing strategy is huge time commitment. The City Council committed to four workshops of three hours each dedicated to developing the vision, mission and goals. The results of their deliberations:

That is about to change as local public safety officials say that the CodeRED® Emergency Notification System is on track for implementation this coming fiscal year. |

A bit off the beaten track for most Newporters, Hunter Park is just north of the Van Zandt Bridge. Look to your right as you cross the bridge towards the water. The park is a bright green saucer shape with a baseball field next to the bridge and tennis courts at the other end. Read More...

Volunteer Opportunites
Newport relies on volunteers. They are serving the city and its institutions all around town. That's because we enjoy living in our wonderful city, seeing friends and neighbors, and contributing to the betterment of our lives in Newport. The Alliance of a Livable Newport relies on volunteers and is currently seeking help from our neighbors in Newport. We need your help on the writing and editing our newsletter, planning and running public forums, and building our membership. If you have a few hours a month, and to want to become involved with people that are working hard for the City of Newport, contact the Volunteer Coordinator and we will be in touch about the ways you can become involved with the ALN. Thanks for helping!
Currently we are looking for someone who may be interested in helping create a "Neighborhood Association Map" for the website: if interested contact:
