Dear,

   Bonnie Watson

A Tribute and Thanks to Bonnie Watson

Early this winter Bonnie Watson told the ALN Board of Directors that she would be stepping down as President of the organization three months before the end of her term for personal reasons centering on pressing family matters.

In the seven years she has been associated with ALN as one of the founders, a Director and most recently as President, Bonnie has lead the organization to a new level of professionalism and been a major contributor to its increasing influence in the city of Newport. She has been a tireless supporter of ALN and an endless source of new ideas. Always willing to take on new projects and follow through, her dedication and hard work have been key to ALN's success.

We all thank Bonnie for her dedication; ALN owes her a tremendous amount. Thanks, Bonnie and we look forward to seeing you at future ALN meetings and events.

 The Ultraviolet Pollution Solution

UV plantIt has been a long cold winter for most Newporters but the employees of C. H. Nickerson (and their many dedicated subcontractors) have had an especially hard time.  They committed to the City of Newport and to Public Works Director Julia Forgue that the Easton Beach Stormwater Disinfection system would be built and ready to test by April of this year.  A few administrative delays pushed the start date of the project to September.  That has meant all hands on deck for engineer Don Bailey and crew through this brutal winter.   Read More...

Band Shelter Can Valet Parking Solve Broadway Problem?

It's winter in Newport and the parking problems have already started.  At the January meeting of the Off Broadway Neighborhood Association the problem of parking in the neighborhood was the top agenda item.  All agreed it was a case of "be careful what you wish for".  As the Broadway area continues to attract new businesses and bigger crowds the parking problems have begun.  The addition of the Fifth Element Restaurant has contributed to a noticeable increase of people parking on the streets just off Broadway.  After close the customers troupe through the residential neighborhoods and the accompanying noise is noticeable.  And this is January! The Food Connection
Food Pantry

Since 2009, The Food Connection has been published as a guide to food assistance for Newport citizens.  It contains:  a listing and hours of food pantries, meal sources for seniors, children, and others in need, a soup kitchen schedule, and how to apply for food assistance programs and reduced/free school meals.

So You Like Newport's Magnificent Beeches...

Beeches

Newporters love our beeches "with their low-spread branches...distinctive smooth elephant skin like bark...nice dense shade...long lasting golden fall leaf displays...interesting copper, purple and fern leaf variations...spooky under stories of weeping beeches that kids love to explore...intricate bare limbs and twigs that highlight our winter scenes." I am quoting here from a lovely bulletin produced by the Tree and Open Space Commission, City of Newport, updated in 2010.
