Greetings! ,
2010 was a challenging year for non-profit fundraising and so I am particularly grateful for the generous contributions made by ALN members during our first membership appeal this fall. We raised over $11,000. This will go a long way to covering the administrative costs of our public forums, newsletter and website.
As we embark on plans for 2011, we look forward to your continued support for our mission to improve local public education, environment and infrastructure; government accountability and public safety. Please visit us often at our various meetings and forums, either in person or online.
On behalf of the Board, I wish you a healthy and prosperous New Year!
Bonnie Watson, President

In Memoriam:
While we anticipate all the excitement that a New Year brings, we would like to pause and remember a dear friend, concerned citizen and great supporter of ALN's mission,
whose recent passing brought sorrow to those of us who were lucky enough to know him...

The Rotary," "Commercial," "Light industrial," or "Scattered Residential," - a collection of different pockets that make a seaside city complete. Amidst somewhat heavily traveled, commercial thoroughfares these words come to mind when someone asks about Newport's "North End" community.

Completing the Broadway Improvement Project is All About Momentum

Only a few weeks ago on November 2, Rhode Island voters approved an eighty million dollar bond referendum to improve the states highways, roads, and bridges. Many local voters, including this writer, thought the improvements to the Broadway streetscape were finally going to begin. Not so fast!, indicates Paige Bronk, Director of Planning, Zoning, Development and Inspection. There are many more hurdles to jump and much more work to be done. Read More...

Newport Economic Study and Harbor Walk Update

The "Newport Waterfront Economic Study" was presented to the City Council in a recent workshop. The study showed that the type of land use with the highest economic return to the City were "water dependent commercial" uses, such as Newport Shipyard and Oldport Marine. Businesses in this classification require direct access to the water for viable operation. Using a per-acre comparison, a water dependent operation brought in more than twice the revenue that a residential condominium or other type of business would. Read More...

"Green" aspects of the new Pell School
On November 2, the voters of Newport approved the $30 million bond issue for the new Pell School for K - 4. Several of the advantages noted prior to the vote were: (1) energy efficient lighting, (2) sustainable construction and (3) healthy, energy efficient ventilation system. The design submitted to and approved by the Rhode Island Department of Education exceeded the criteria for the Northeast Collaboration for High Performing Schools (NECHIPS) and qualified for an additional 2% in funding from the State. The following considerations for sustainable school design were included: Read More...
