ALN is looking forward to a warm and sunny summer for the residents of Newport. We are planning some exciting forums on issues of concern to the public well-being of Newport's diverse neighborhoods. In July, the State Education Commissioner will speak to our members. We hope that you will continue to join us during these forums and that you will look to this newsletter for information on topics of interest. We welcome your suggestions on how we can improve our service to the community.

Newport Budget Process
The City Manager's proposed budget for FY2011 was submitted to Council at their meeting on April 28, 2010. A series of 4 budget workshops were conducted with the Council. The various departments present their portion of the budget and the Council asks questions for clarification. Read More...

Education Deborah Gist, RI Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education to speak at ALN public forum on July 22
Ms. Deborah A. Gist will provide an overview of the significant progress her Department's made since she began her tenure as the Rhode Island Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education just a year ago. Earlier this month, the Commissioner submitted Rhode Island's Phase Two Race to the Top application for $75 million in additional school funding. Report on the Forum on Hunger
The problem of hunger in Rhode Island, and Newport County in particular, was the topic of a forum held at the Martin Luther King Community Center (MLKCC) , May 27. Co-sponsored by Alliance for a Livable Newport and MLKCC, guest speaker, Andrew Schiff, CEO of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, noted the recession and high unemployment, exacerbated by the recent spring floods, have caused the number of people seeking food assistance to soar. Meet Ron Becker, ALN Treasurer.... 
Ron Becker has been the treasurer and a director of ALN for the past five years, participating in forums and representing ALN at other public events. Ron was born in Rochester, NY, and grew up in Los Angeles, CA. Moving to Boston in 1968, he had a career as an actuary spanning 35 years. Ron and his wife, Johanna, became Newport "weekenders" in 1988 and, after retiring, took up full-time residence here in 2005. He now pursues a variety of volunteer activities, including ALN, serving as a member of Newport's Trust & Investment Commission, serving on the executive committee of Salve Regina's Circle of Scholars and leading Circle of Scholars seminars discussing international current events. He also finds time to indulge interests in reading mysteries and U.S. history books, as well as in gourmet food and fine wines. Read More...
