Greetings! ,
The Alliance for Livable Newport extends its sympathies to all of the flood victims this month in Rhode Island and especially to its membership. We hope that disaster victims are seeking relief and "bailing out." April showers certainly will bring May flowers and a hopeful Spring for us all.
We had an exciting forum on March 29th concerning the "Pros and Cons" of LNG tankers on Narragansett Bay with a
full house at CCRI, Newport. Please view the video of the panel discussion that took place, in our newsletter and on our website.

Interview with Dana Titcomb
Newport's New Historic Preservation Planner
In response to the persuasive influence of some of the city's more significant preservationists - it became evident that there was a need for a full-time professional liaison between the City Council and the community.
Consequently, Dana Titcomb, has been hired to serve as the new historic preservation planner.
(Edited from the original article that appeared in the "Green Light" by Mary Jane Rodman, the bulletin of the Point Association. "DANA TITCOMB, OUR NEW HISTORIC PRESERVATION PLANNER")

Education
For Open and Rational Negotiations Recently, the ALN Board urged the Newport School Committee to add limited transparency to the upcoming union negotiations by having each party make public their positions going into each negotiating session and again coming out of each session. ALN is a strong advocate for open government and transparent processes. Nowhere is the need for open government more critical than in the City of Newport's negotiations with its employee unions. Open negotiations is the only fair approach to protect the interests of the city taxpayers and school employees with less seniority than the negotiators. Read more

Public Health & Safety Preserving Newport's Green Spaces
There will be no fan-fare or ribbon cutting at Coddington Cove on Maple Avenue, where a section of Miantonomi Park has been converted into a new Rhode Island Housing Section 8 project. RIH is currently holding a lottery for the 42 new, large family units. Anyone may apply---there is no preference for former Newport residents. According to RIH this is not the same subdivision as Newport Heights, so the construction company is not required to follow the guidelines and promises made to local residents.

Bulb Planting in Point Parks On October 24 last fall, undaunted by a day that started in a heavy "fog" and ended (early) in a deluge, volunteers from the Point Association planted 500 grape hyacinth bulbs in Storer, Battery and Martins Parks on Washington Street. This is an event that has been going on for many years; the daffodils, day lilies, and iris you see in the parks are the result. Grape hyacinths are new to our effort and we look forward to seeing the small, bright blue flowers every April. Some gardeners on the Point regard grape hyacinths as "invasive." They do tend to multiply freely but this is what we want! Hot chocolate and coffee helped us get the job done and added to the sense of community. The flowers will bloom in a week or ten days. Look for pictures later this month.
