Greetings!,
ALN's October Forum will be a "Double Feature."
Newport's Neighborhood Energy Challenge Committee will launch a Neighborhood Energy Challenge to encourage residents to reduce their energy use and utility bills. ALN is pleased to support this initiative, along with volunteers from Newport, Middletown, and Portsmouth, the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission, Salve Regina University and National Grid. Ms. Beth Milham will make a presentation about The Challenge at ALN's Forum. The Forum will also feature a presentation by Ms. Julia Forgue, Director of Utilities, on Newport's Force Main Sewer Repair Project. An update and progress report will be provided regarding the events leading up to the failure of the sewer force main and repairs made to correct the system.
The Forum will be held on Monday, October 26, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the Newport Public Library, Program Room. We look forward to seeing you then!
Sincerely,
Bonnie Watson ALN President |

Infrastructure & Environment Getting There: You Decide
Weight loss? Dollars saved? Better mental health? Whatever the reason, if you want the City to offer healthy alternatives (to walk, bike, or use public transportation), make your choices known: Newport Planning Board. Tired of traffic congestion, few options? Aquidneck Island Planning Commission is developing a Master Plan to guide funding for capital improvements in the Island's overall transportation system. Residents are urged to take the survey. Do you favor a working waterfront and public access?

Education Health & Wellness: First Annual Report
Recently, Newport Public Schools received the Rhode Island Healthy Schools Coalition 2009 Award of Honor for the "Table Hosting" program, a unique way for kids to learn nutrition by doing. The credit for this award goes to the grassroots effort of concerned parents and community members who make up the creative, hard-charging Health & Wellness Committee. |
Public Health & Safety: Graffiti Not "Art" to Most!
Experts agree that immediate removal is the best way to prevent future graffiti. Newport Clean City Coordinator, Kristin Littlefield, recommends that the location be reported at 845-5613 or fill out this form. The City can remove graffiti only from public property but Kristin can advise the homeowner of the best method or product for clean-up. Notify police at 847-1212 when public or private property is damaged. These acts of vandalism can be tracked as an individual's particular scribble is often identifiable. |

Government Accountability
ALN's Financial Committee (Ron Becker, Fred Best, and Mark Colborn, assisted by Sarah Highland) highlighted both concerns and opportunities during the September Forum, "Third Annual Financial Review" of Newport's Finances. In addition to the City Budget, both the School Budget and Water/Sewer rates were addressed. |
News from the Neighborhoods Point Association Wins Accolades from "Newport In Bloom"
Undaunted by the wettest summer in over twenty years and even enduring the theft of some of their plants, volunteers from the "Point" Neighborhood Association planted and nurtured flowers in a dozen planters in three water-view parks in that locale. Their dedication even included carrying water filled containers from their homes to the three sites. Their labor was rewarded this year with an award from the prestigious organization "Newport in Bloom" which is dedicated to recognizing the excellence of work by non professional gardeners.
