Greetings!,
Welcome to the first Alliance for a Livable Newport electronic newsletter, published in celebration of our fifth year operating as a non-profit community organization. ALN is a diverse group of residents interested in an open, non-partisan discussion of civic issues. Our goal is to provide a place for residents to engage in a full exchange of ideas, information and solutions. This e-newsletter is part of our effort. Published monthly, it will include updates on our four areas of focus: Education, Infrastructure & Environment, Government Accountability and Public Health & Safety. Please join us at our next public forum which will cover the current state of Newport's Financial Crisis on Monday, September 28th in the Newport Public Library Program Room starting at 6:30pm.
If you find this newsletter informative, we hope you will forward it to a friend using the link in the left column below. Sincerely,
Bonnie Watson ALN President

Education
ALN's summer Forums presented findings of the State Task Force on Urban Education and the Rhode Island Public Expenditures Council. In addition to their common concerns over funding and quality of education, both groups stressed the need for collaboration and shared services between local and State organizations. Rather than taking an all-or-nothing position on Regionalization, proactive 'first steps' can begin now. Learn More...WHAT YOU CAN DO: Share your solutions: info@livablenewport.net

The City of Newport faced serious financial difficulties even before the recent economic crisis. ALN's third annual review of Newport's finances will be the topic of the September 28th Forum, focusing on actions the City's officials have taken and could have taken during the past twelve months. It also looks ahead to Newport's future financial challenges and opportunities, highlighting the impact of economic conditions on the City's revenues and expenses. The audience will be encouraged to join in with questions and comments following the presentation. Read Past Forums

What A Racket!
Noise from excessively loud pipes on motorcycles has not abated from previous years, according to those who have storefronts or residences on the main thoroughfares of Newport. A recent meeting with the Chief of Police and City Manager revealed only a slight increase in the number of motorcycle stops this year. In 2008, ALN sponsored a forum on the subject of noise abatement. As a result, a task force on loud motorcycles made several recommendations. Learn more...
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Let us know if you have a suggestion about how this ear-shattering nuisance can be controlled. Report specific noise complaints directly to the Newport Police: 847-1212.

News from the Neighborhoods
"From the Earth we come, to the earth we return. In between, we garden, Allene Reynolds." So reads the plaque in the garden at Equality Park that is dedicated to the late Allene Reynolds. On July 28th, 2009, around 30 people attended a dedication to Mrs. Reynolds sponsored by the Off-Broadway Neighborhood Association. OBNA president Jack McVicker and other attendees sang the praises of the well-loved Mrs. Reynolds. Stories of hauling wagon loads of bottled water to the park garden and working at the annual clean-up despite a broken wrist illustrated her dedication to and love for the park. Mr. McVicker identified Allene as the moving force behind park enhancements. Read More...
