Greetings!

Thank you to everyone for all your great comments and questions.  Please keep them coming!  Since this is the season for the great outdoors, this newsletter will feature some oils that help with all those pesky insects and their itchy bites and stings.  But first, a great question ...
Q & A's
Q: As a beginner using oils, one of my questions would be a good book to purchase that gives me the basics on oil use and what to have in a "first aid" kit.

A: As to what oils to have in a "first aid" kit, I'll be covering many of those in the newsletters, starting with the oils featured below.

As to books, I have several I use, but the three I seem to use the most (in order) are:

Reference Guide for Essential Oils  Compiled by Connie and Alan Higley  (Get the coil bound one)

Essential Oils Desk Reference  Compiled by Essential Science Publishing

Essential Oils Integrative Medical Guide  by D. Gary Young, ND
Featured Oil - Insect Bites, Melalueca & Purification

While several oils are effective with insect bites, I seem to usually grab Melaleuca alternifolia, commonly known as tea tree oil, or the blend Purification containing the oils of Citronella, Lemongrass, Lavandin, Rosemary, Melaleuca and Myrtle.

I have a couple of clients who really react to mosquito bites by forming large welts with severe itching.  It would always amaze them how quickly the welts & itching dissipated with just a drop or two of Melaleuca oil.  So, if you know it is a mosquito bite, grab Melaleuca.  Also, some research shows frequent mosquito bites could be due to a vitamin B deficiency.  So you might want to check that out with your medical practitioner.

If you don't know what bit you, grab Melaleuca and Purification.  The oils in Purification seem to have the ability to help draw out the poison from the insect bite, while Melaleuca seems to help with the itching and swelling.  Purification works well with most bites, including bees, ticks, hornets, wasps and spiders.  Mix Purification with water in a spray bottle and use as an insect repellant.  Lavender and Peppermint also help reduce insect-bite-induced itching, swelling, and infection.

Now for some of those nasty bites: for Black Widows use lavender every 2-3 minutes and seek medical attention; for Recluse Spiders use Purification and Basil every 2-3 minutes and seek medical attention; and for snake bites use Basil, Purification and Helichrysum and again, seek medical attention.  Adding Helichrysum oil seems to help with the pain.

Make sure to keep any area with broken skin covered to help reduce the chance of infection, especially staph infections.  These bacteria are often on our skin, but don't give us any trouble till there is a pathway into our bodies.

So grab your oils and enjoy the summer!  And please let me know how the oils worked for you.

Remember to take charge of your health, till next time ...
