5 Star Reviews for
"Leap Years"
:

"Maryanne Ross has a wonderful way with words, advice and organization. Her book "Leap Years: How to Make the Rest of Your Years the Best of Your Years" is a true gem"

"The timing of this book falling into my hands was nothing short of serendipity - I so needed this encouragement. It's simply packed with uplifting quotes and ideas on how to stop letting yourself be held back, to move forward and make the rest of your life the best part of your life. I love how the author encourages us to take leaps, little ones, scary ones, even a giant leap. From childhood, it is so ingrained into us NOT to make mistakes, take chances, risk failure, that we can be, as she says "paralyzed into non-action."

Greetings!

Spring is such a perfect time of year to shed old behaviors and adopt new ones.  I hope you'll find this month's newsletter motivating enough so that you'll spring into action and drop the "I can't" thoughts that hold you back.

To get you going, I've called upon two personal friends who have overcome their own negative thoughts so that they could each accomplish their goals and impact the lives of others in a positive way.

I hope you'll be as inspired as I am by Jan and Russ and their personal achievements.  Now read on to discover how these high achievers have learned to drop their can'ts......

Jan's Cancer walkJan Fraser's Story

On my first Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, I was walking for my mother,
Sadie, a kind and gentle soul who suffered through losing both breasts
to cancer.  I was confident that I could walk the 39 miles in two days
in celebration of her life.

The walk was staged in Long Beach, California, and I chose that venue
because I wanted to make sure that the terrain would be flat and easy to cover
for my 60 year old legs.   I hadn't trained at all which is not recommended.
There was always something more important to do and I never got around to taking
practice walks.  I was regretting that hasty decision as I walked each
step of the way.

Climbing the hills was the greatest opportunity for me to bring out the old
"I can't" message.  I was straining unused muscles to accomplish
my goal.  I asked myself what had I been thinking to have chosen
to be so unprepared.

What got me over the "I can't" message was seeing my mother's
face in my mind and hearing her voice.  She had passed away 16 years before and I
loved her positive attitude and how she continually believed in me.

I got a hold of my mind and said to myself, "this hill is not even as
big as a minute of time compared to the years and years of suffering
that Mom went through with her cancer, treatment and surgeries."

"I can do this."
That perspective pulled me out of my "I can't" mode and I flew up
those hills and accomplished my 58,764 steps that day.

I share my message of positive life force in my books and speaking.  especially,

Russ in actionRuss Thorne's Story

My mom and sister are both cancer survivors and have participated in the Relay For Life for years. I have supported them in the past, even made cameo appearances, but it was their gig. Never thought I would be labeled a cancer survivor. Still hard to grasp that concept.
Had my six month follow up with the dermatologist last night. She found a spot she wanted to biopsy. Bummer! After she was done, she asked if I had any questions. "yeah. Can I still go to the gym tonight?"
She laughed, but let me. Went back tonight, too. :)

Two years ago one of my coworkers murdered another coworker, because she wouldn't go out with him, and had found a "potty cam" planted by this guy. I had just come out of a meeting with the girl. We heard a loud commotion, and went to see what was going on. She was in the floor bleeding, with a knife in her. She died before the EMC or police arrived.
It turned out he had a record already. We struggled to understand why somebody like that was allowed to work with us...next to us. It could have been any of us.
I still battle my anger. The company urged all of us to talk to counselors. I did. At one point she told me that for many people working-out or exercise was a hobby, but for me it was a necessary outlet. I have since made it a point to remain physically active, whether by working-out or running. So when I had to have the surgery for my cancer I knew that I would have to get back to it as quickly as possible. I even hired a personal trainer at first to make sure that I didn't overdo it, and injure myself. The first run after that was for the Special Olympics. That was the perfect comeback run.

Ok...having written all of that I guess my "I can't" would be that I couldn't let myself fall back into the self-destructive anger that was sucking the life out of me.

Now Drop Your Own Can'ts!

I hope Jan and Russ have demonstrated that we all have our own mental baggage, yet some people just refuse to let it prevent them from dreaming and achieving!
Their two powerful stories stories are different yet powerful, but there is one central theme, you can do more than you think you can.  You can turn adversity into achievement, you can conquer fear, overcome physical limitations, and create the life of your dreams.  And it all starts the day you start, just as soon as you drop your "I cant's" and begin to believe "I CAN"!

Use All of Your Senses to Enjoy March!

You follow the nutritional advice to take five servings of fruits and vegetables each day for the sake of your body, right?  Why not serve your heart, your soul and your mind five servings of nutrition each day also? Let's fully engage all of our senses as we enjoy the simple pleasures of the month of March.

Here's 5 & 1/2 ways to experience the world around you and enjoy the transition from bitter the cold of winter to the gradual warming that comes with spring

Sight!  - Be on the lookout for our feathered friends. RobiEagle Webcamns, Gold Finches and Bluebirds are frolicking in my yard and they are on their way to your house too!  Weeping Willows are pulling out their spring dresses, and the tulips, hyacinths and crocus bulbs are peaking their little faces out as well.  If the weather is still too bad to go out, webcams can help bring the outdoors in. The photo at right was sent to me by a fellow nature lover.  This eagle family is being observed via webcam at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.

Sound!  - March is coming in with its typical gusty winds, and the sound of it howling is music to my ears.  I just know it will go out in lamb-like fashion and sunny days are just around the corner.

Smell! - You might want to protect your sniffer this month as the landscaping crews are starting their springs chores.  In my neck of the woods, mulching crews are starting to appear, and it's a sure sign that Mother Nature is waking up from her long winter nap.  Even better, the Girl Scouts are delivering the heavenly smell of Thin Mints!  Counteract the after effects of all those delectable morsels by taking an early spring walk in the woods and enjoy the fresh smells of the awakening earth.

Taste! - Easter arrives rather late this year but the Easter Bunny Supply Chain has already begun to drop off the candy confections enabling you to indulge in your favorite jelly beans and peeps.

Go green! Enjoy cabbage (with corned beef of course), asparagus, green jelly beans, green beer, and key lime pie.

Touch! - Trade in your heaviest sweaters for some smoother jerseys and knits.  Visit a farm supply and pet the new baby chicks and bunnies.  Trade a back rub or massage with your significant other.  Better yet, touch the heart of another with a simple act of kindness.  It will leave you feeling good all over!

Gratitude - Make a list of all the many things you have to be grateful for this month.  I'm grateful for buds on my Forsythia bushes, Bluebirds on my fence, cuddly babies to love, a lower electric bill, new classes to teach, and the health to enjoy it all.  I'm feeling especially blessed this month and I hope you are too!

For all who have loved and lost a dear one - here's a poem to sustain you through these last gray days of winter

i carry your heart with me

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in

my heart) i am never without it (anywhere

i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done

by only me is your doing, my darling) i fear

no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want

no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)

and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant

and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows

(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud

and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows

higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)

and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
