 Prayer of St Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred,
let me sow love; Where there is injury,
pardon; Where there is doubt,
faith; Where there is despair,
hope; Where there is darkness,
light;
Where there is sadness,
joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled as to
console;
To be understood as to
understand;
To be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we
receive;
It is in pardoning that we
are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we
are born to eternal life.

Greetings!
October has got to be my favorite month! The leaves are starting to change in Virginia and the long hot days are finally behind us. The harvesting of crops is underway and it's a perfect time to talk about the law of the farm. If you're ready, then let's go! |
|
Law of the Farm
A few years ago I worked on a values statement for myself. As it took shape, I began to notice that all the value words that I had chosen (live, love, laugh) began with the letter L, except the value that I referred to as work. Then I remembered Stephen Covey's analogy of the Law of the Farm. Simply put and in Covey's words, the Law of the Farm is this:
"The only thing that endures over time is the Law of the Farm: I must prepare the ground, put in the seed, cultivate, weed, water, and nurture growth. So also in a business or a marriage there is no quick fix where you can just move in and magically make everything right with a positive mental attitude and a package of success formulas."
This powerful quote reminds me that I must sow to reap a harvest and that I can only expect to reap what I sow. All too often in this age of hustle and bustle and instant gratification, we somehow think we can cut all sorts of corners and expect no loss of quality in products, services, and relationships. For me, The Law of the Farm is a great reminder of reality. It's a reminder of the work ethics I was raised to appreciate. |

The Law of Attraction
The recently popular Law of Attraction states that we create the things, events, and people that come into our lives. Our thoughts, feelings, words, and actions produce energies which, in turn, attract like energies. Negative energies attract negative energies and positive energies attract positive energies.
I think it's vitally important to have clarity around goals, to believe that we can achieve our heart's desires, but I also think that manifesting our dreams requires more than putting our wishes out to the universe. It takes action and the willingness to expend effort to realize our goals. I've found the best description of this Law in Wayne Dyer's new book, Excuses BeGone. In it, Dyer claims that we don't attract what we think about, we attract what we are. This is echoed in the beautiful prayer of St. Francis of Assisi (see below left).
This month, make it a habit to contemplate the values that you most appreciate and put them into practice. Before you know it, you'll find yourself described by those very values.

Law of the Universe
Think back to when you were in grade school. You learned a lot of basic truths about how the universe operated. You learned about the sun, moon, and stars. You learned about time and seasons. In different hemispheres, the seasons may be opposite our own, but we know that winter melts into spring. Spring blossoms into summer and summer dresses for fall. Fall sheds its clothes to so that it can bend with the harsh winds of winter.
This month we can mirror the fall season by shedding our habit for "doing" and practice just "being." Before the stress and frantic activities of the holiday season overwhelms you, take some time to fully engage all of your senses and be still. As a person with a penchant for packing in as much as any 24-hour period can possibly hold, I'm trying to take my own advice. I'm trying to practice stillness.
Back when were an agricultural economy, we were better able to delineate between work and rest. Now that we've become a knowledge economy, the lines between working hours and personal time are much more blurred. It's more important than ever to make an effort to allow yourself time to work and time to rest. |

5 & 1/2 Ways to Enjoy October!
1) Fruits and Vegetables! - Pick them, bake them, and don't forget to eat them! Apples, pumpkins, and pomegranates come to mind mostly because they're my fall favorites.
2) Fall Festivals - The fun continues this month. In Virginia, the town of Waterford puts on its annual festival. If I still lived in Florida, I'd be heading to McIntosh and Micanopy to enjoy their annual celebrations. No doubt your local area has a festival or two. Consult your Chamber of Commerce and don't miss out on the fun.
3) Leaf Peeping! - Take in the beauty of the leaves while you can. They'll go out in a blaze of glory and they'll do it too quickly for my taste. Bring some inside and marvel at the miracle of their color, smell, and texture. Give the best ones to your friends and family like a fall valentine. Rake them up and just once, dive into them and revel in their glory. Don't forget to hug the tree that produced them.
4) Neighborhoods - Enjoy yours right now and notice others whenever you travel. Watch as wreaths come out of the attic to adorn the doorways. Pumpkins, gourds, and scarecrows are displayed in yards and light glos through windows welcoming families home. Offer a blessing to these families as you pass by.
5) Halloween! - Plan to start celebrating early! Why contain the fun to just one day? Rent a bunch of scary movies and laugh away the ghosts and goblins. Become a kid again this month and plan a fun costume. If not, celebrate by offering treats to your coworkers. They don't have to be calorie-laden or expensive. Give 'em an apple and a smile!
And the 1/2, you ask? Practice Gratitude! Keep a journal and list 5 things that you have to be grateful for every day. Always stay in gratitude. We have sooo much to be grateful for. If you can't find 100 reasons to be grateful, let me know and I'll send you mine! |
