 Listen Quotes:

The only way to get what you really want, is to know what you really want. And the only way to know what you really want, is to know yourself. And the only way to know yourself, is to be yourself. And the only way to be yourself is to listen  to your heart.

Each person has inside a basic decency and goodness. If he listens to it and acts on it, he is giving a great deal of what it is the world needs most.

Pablo Casals

Take hold of your own life.
See that the whole existence is celebrating.
These trees are not serious, these birds are not serious.
The rivers and the oceans are wild,
and everywhere there is fun,
everywhere there is joy and delight.
Watch existence,
listen to the existence, and become part of it.

Greetings!

The word listen is usually is a reminder for us to listen to others.  I'm totally in favor of practicing good listening skills, and becoming fully present and engaged with our loved ones, friends, co-workers and customers. But this month I want to encourage you to listen to the experts, to tune in to nature and most importantly, to tune in to yourself.

Listen to Your Doctor!
If our doctors were all as handsome as this guy, maybe we'd listen to their advice!  Seriously though, we really need to take time to understand and follow the advice of our doctors and get the health screens recommended for our age groups.

Labor Day marks the third anniversary of the passing of my dearest friend and mentor Deborah DeGreen.  Her death might have been prevented if she had listened to her doctor's advice and taken the time to get the health screens recommended to her.  Losing Deborah has left a giant hole in the lives and hearts of her family and friends.

We need to remember that our lives aren't just our own, they also belong to those who love us. I hope you will heed this advice for your own sake and on behalf of your loved ones.
Listen to the Voice of Your Heart!
Conventional wisdom encourages us to listen to the voice of reason.  Sometimes we need to listen to another sage voice, the voice of our heart.  I discovered that just two weekends ago, and I'm so glad that I listened! Here's what happened.

I arrived at my daughter's house to visit and to help with her twin baby girls.  My daughter asked me to go to the Montgomery County Fair that weekend.  I have to admit that I've never been to a summer fair.  The idea of being crammed into a space with thousands of others in sweltering, mosquito-infested weather does not appeal to me.  I'm up for spring and fall festivals and will even huddle under a blanket at a Christmas Parade, but summer fairs aren't on my list of "must attends."

But this was my daughter asking.  My pride and joy, mother of my other two pride and joys!  How could I refuse?  She further informed me that while there, we'd go to the Demolition Derby.  Apparently there are people who pay money to watch other people crash cars into each other.  Apparently I gave birth to the one of those people, and she managed to marry another one of those people!  But she wanted me to go, and she was dangling a bright shiny object in front of me - time with her and her babies....so off we went.

It turns out that Demolition Derbies are kind of fun and the babies loved it.  I watched our baby Hazel jump up and down on her daddy's lap and wave to the crowd.  Baby Ruby sat in her carrier strapped to my chest and happily shredded the program.  But half-way through the Derby, Ruby got a bit fussy.  I offered to take her out to the fair and walk her around.

Once we were back in the fair, I realized that night had truly fallen.  As we walked, the fair came alive.  We were surrounded with sights, sounds, and aromas of all sorts.  Ruby clung to my neck, her ear pressed to my lips, as I sang her my special blend of half-remembered and half made-up lullabies.  She's still a baby, and since she doesn't know any better, she enjoys it.  Gradually she drifted off to sleep and we returned to the Derby entrance to wait for her parents and sister.  When we got back to the gate, I swayed her body with mine to keep her sleeping.  She leaned back in the carrier, and spread her arms wide.  As she did, a cool breeze swept over us.  It blew the hair off her little forehead.  Her eyes remained closed, but a big, dimpled smile spread across her face.  And for just a moment, the world slipped away.  There was just me and Ruby enjoying a delicious summer night at the Montgomery County Fair.
hat face twinnies Take Time to Be Still and Listen
The word listen reminds me that in order to stay centered, to stay on my life's purpose, I must take time to be still and listen.  I do my best listening out in the middle of nowhere.  I need to listen to nature, to get where the only sounds around me are made by the gurgle of a brook, the chirping of birds and the wind in the trees.

This is a photo of Dolly Sods Wilderness, which is located in the Allegheny Mountains of eastern West Virginia.  I was fortunate enough to hike there a few years ago in late September.  On that hike, I got to hear a real babbling brook, for the very first time.  It was thrilling!! It's one of many fond memories of that day.  Often when I'm out there communing with nature, I can hear myself think, and the voice I hear on those occasions is my intuition.

I'm learning to trust that voice.  I'm learning to understand that the direction I take based on that voice of intuition is the path I'm meant to take - there is no mistake It is the perfect path for me, at the perfect time in my life. And it is intended to bring me to my highest purpose.  And so it is for each of us.  Your path is leading you to your highest purpose - trust that there is no mistake!

Resources to Help You Listen!

Here is a list of audio books I recommend to help you develop your Listening skills:

Eat, Pray, Love - Elizabeth Gilbert
Simple Abundance - Sara Ban Breathnach
The Art of Being Fully Human - Leo Buscaglia

All are read by the author, and their voices add so much to the content.

5 & 1/2 Ways to Enjoy September!

1) Hike! -  Yes, it's time again, and the early mornings are fabulous now.  Since the kids are back in school, many hiking trails and state parks are virtually empty and yours to enjoy.  If you're in the DC Metro area, try Cat Rock in Maryland, Dolly Sods in West Virginia, and Old Rag in Virginia.  You won't be sorry!

2) Fall Festivals - The fun starts this month, as harvests begin and local farmers celebrate their bounty.

3) Go Back to School!  - Take a class, learn something new.  If not career related, try cooking, a new language, or yoga.

4) Make bread - It's the perfect companion to the fresh fruits and vegetables you can pick up right now.  Try new recipes for breads, muffins, and biscuits.

5) Football! - Take your pick: pro, college, or high school.  The weather is still warm enough to enjoy the game and cheer on your team.

And the 1/2, you ask?  Practice Gratitude! Keep a journal and list 5 things that you have to be grateful for every day.  Always stay in gratitude. We have sooo much to be grateful for.  If you can't find 100 reasons to be grateful, let me know and I'll send you mine!
