Greetings!
Have you ever noticed that certain days, like vacation days, stand out in our memory? I think it's because we're on the look out for new sights, and we're alert to everything. Yes, there is often exquisite beauty in our vacation destinations and I think you should take a bazillion photos so that you can relive those days for years to come. But this month I hope to encourage you look closer at the ordinary times and extract beauty from every facet of your life.

Look at Life From Every Angle!
Last month I admitted that summer isn't my favorite time of year. I detest the heat, but I do love the colors of summer. The strawberries, blueberries, grapes and melons are so vibrant and rich. Watching my daughter's garden produce tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers, I'm transported back into time, to the days of exploring my father's garden as a little girl. Other things I love to look at during summer are the dazzling colors of roses, sunflowers, and of course, butterflies!
You might be wondering about those times in life when the sites we're exposed to aren't so beautiful. How do you find beauty in the ugliness in life? Let me share some things I've discovered. Two years ago I traveled to Mumbai, India, to speak at a Conference. I was warned beforehand that the poverty would overwhelm me. The folks who told me so did not exaggerate. My first inclination was to look away, give my presentation, fly home and forget it. But the trip left an indelible mark on my memory. I remember seeing whole families living by the side of the road. I looked out my hotel window and watched a young boy brushing his teeth in run-off water from a construction site. I saw mothers cradling nearly naked children outside makeshift huts. The poverty was far from beautiful. But what remains in my mind is the resilience of the human spirit. The ability of mankind to go about the everyday activities that all humans share (despite our conditions),continues to resonate with me. It is, in it's own way, a thing of beauty.
I've found that there is beauty in both joy and sorrow. I've been fortunate enough to be present when a life has entered this world and when one has departed. I could easily describe looking at my daughter and granddaughters for the first time, and try to capture the beauty, but you probably have experienced something similar yourselves. So let me try to describe the beauty I've seen in sorrow. Ten years ago, I traveled to West Virgina to say goodbye to a beloved auntie. We all expected her to pass away while I was in transit. As was her nature, she clung tenaciously to life for several days. As she did, a fragile thing of beauty unfolded before my eyes. I looked on as her son and daughter tended to her. I watched as they fed her ice chips, combed her hair, sang to her, prayed over her, consoled each other, and their families. Just three years later, I was again present when her son, my (more like a brother),cousin passed away. I watched his wife of over forty years say a last and tender goodbye. As heartbreaking as each of these occasions were, I felt as if heaven touched the earth, and allowed me a glimpse. It is often said that all who love are blind. I prefer to think that those who love have perfect sight, sight that is not destroyed by age or illness.
One more place to look for beauty is within. It's a place few of us visit. When we do, we tend to spend the time criticizing and fault finding. Look deeper and you will find an endless summer of beauty, love and joy. It was there when you born, and it's still there, I promise you, it's there.
As you move through the ordinary days of August, I hope you will look for beauty in all the expected places. I also hope you will look a little deeper and discover it everywhere.

5 & 1/2 Ways to Enjoy August!
1) Don't Cook! - stay out of the kitchen as much as is possible. Make simple suppers of sandwiches, salads, even an occasional breakfast for supper won't kill you.
2) Keep Swimming! - It's the only sane form of exercise right now, and it just feels so good on a hot day.
3) Escape! - This a prefect time of year to visit Niagra Falls and enjoy the "Maid of the Mist" boat ride. Other places I've enjoyed in August were Vancouver, and New Hampshire. I'm told that San Francisco is also the ticket. I also think an Alaskan cruise sounds like heaven.
4) Visit a Museum - Enjoy the air conditioning and learn something in the process. Another plus is that most museums are low cost or free. Now how cool is that?
5) Stay inside and watch epic movies - Try Dr. Zhivago, Gone With the Wind, Gettysburg, the Godfather trilogy, or a mini series.
And the 1/2, you ask? Practice Gratitude! Keep a journal and list 5 things that you have to be grateful for every day. Always stay in gratitude. We have sooo much to be grateful for. If you can't find 100 reasons to be grateful, let me know and I'll send you mine!
