Greetings!

lemonadeWhile the heat in Virginia is no laughing matter these days, I'm finding the best way to bear it is to look on the light side!

Since the sizzling heat is here to stay for at least another couple months, why not enjoy the lazy days of summer, and exercise your right to
laugh?

Laugh Your Way to Better Health!

Do you have someone in your life who makes you laugh, the kind of laughter that makes your belly hurt?  I sure hope you do, and if not, I sure hope you find someone who will.  My daughter Christy is that person for me, and she has been since she was born. And now she's given me these two adorable baby girls who make me laugh more than I ever thought possible.

Why is laughter so important?  Research confirms that laughing helps us release endorphins which in turn prevent illness. Norman Cousins was an author, journalist, and professor whose life dem
onstrated the amazing power of laughter.  In 1964, doctors found that his spine was deteriorating and informed Cousins that his chance of surviving was about 1 in 500.  Cousins checked himself out of the hospital and into a hotel room.  He armed himself with a projector and a stack of the funniest movies of the day.  He noticed that his laughter stimulated chemicals in his body that allowed him hours of pain-free sleep.  Within weeks he was on the mend and back to work.  His further research and documentation has helped many others overcome life-threatening illnesses through the amazing power of laughter

eric in shadesI'm so fortunate to have a number of little ones in my life who keep me laughing.  This little guy is Eric.  His parents have a wonderful and wacky sense of humor and I'm always looking forward to their next idea for funny cards, songs and videos.  I also get a great deal of amusement from my pets.  And whenever I watch birds squabbling over the birdseed I put out, I'm reminded that God has a tremendous sense of humor and provides us with numerous reasons to laugh.

Summer beautiesHow many of you interact with people who suck all the joy out of life?  The kind who do nothing but complain and whine and when you are around them you feel like you've just jumped into a freezing cold ocean?

I think we need to seek out the cheerful and positive individuals and run screaming from the negative ones, because life is just too short to spend another minute with anyone who doesn't lift you up and make your heart sing!

5 & 1/2 Ways
to Enjoy July!

1) Have a cookout! -  Everything tastes better on the grill and it keeps the house cool. Do your corn, veggies, and potatoes outside also. Go online and find some new recipes for your favorite foods.

2) Swim! - Whether you prefer a lake, pool, or the ocean, it really doesn't matter, nothing beats a cool dip on a hot day.  And best of all, it is a legitimate form of exercise.

3) Don't forget the fireflies - They're putting on their show nightly this month, so sit out and count how many you can spot.  It's bound to make you feel like a kid again!

4) Take in a baseball game - Enjoy the sights and sounds, the peanuts,  the hot dogs and the cold beer.  If you can make your way to Cooperstown, even better.  I visited three years ago with my buddy, Mike Ford.  Go to the Farm Museum while you're there, it is a trip down memory lane, even if you grew up in a city.

5) Stay inside and watch old movies - summer is my favorite time of year to have a movie weekend.  Set a theme, rent a whole bag of movies and give yourself permission to be a couch potato.  Why not check out some classic comedies like Abbot and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis?

And the 1/2, you ask?  Practice Gratitude! Keep a journal and list 5 things that you have to be grateful for every day.  Always stay in gratitude. We have sooo much to be grateful for.  If you can't find 100 reasons to be grateful, let me know and I'll send you mine!

When you were born, everyone around you was smiling and you were crying.
Live your life so that when you die, you're smiling and everyone around you is crying.

CFSCM eblast One Final Thought on Laughter

As you are now aware, I am NOT a fan of summer, and usually do more than my share of complaining about the heat.  Two summers ago, a friend sent me an email describing the conditions under which our military is fighting in Iraq.  Whenever the heat gets the best of me, I try to think of what our soldiers (and our allies) are enduring and what their days are like.  We owe them our prayers and support and one great way to show our appreciation for what they do is to enjoy the freedom they are fighting to protect.
The right to laugh is one of those freedoms!
