Learn How to Master Your Mind!
Learning is key to survival. Our environment is constantly changing, as are our bodies. Our minds must adapt to these changes, and learning is the mechanism that enables that change. View everything that happens in life as an opportunity to learn, experience, and grow. Don't make any exceptions! You might be experiencing something right now that you see as an obstacle or even some sort of curse from above. Look deeper, resolve to act differently than you might have acted yesterday or last year. Learn to harness your emotions so that you can think and act in ways that are constructive, and in alignment with your long-term goals. Look for the learning opportunity in everything that occurs in your life, and when you do, I promise you, you will find it, and it will make you a better, stronger person.
Dr. Maya Angelou is perhaps one of the greatest examples of a person who has dedicated her life to learning and helping others do the same. As a young single mother, she supported her son by working as a waitress and cook. Over the span of her remarkable life, Dr. Angelou has received over 30 honorary degrees, and has served on two presidential committees, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Arts in 2000, the Lincoln Medal in 2008, and has received 3 Grammy Awards. Whenever I begin to lose my motivation, her story lights a fire within me. I hope she energizes you as well!
Learn for Advancement!
Many folks are just grateful to have a job these days. But the forward-thinking individuals are just as focused on getting raises and promotions. How do you accomplish that in this economy? Here are 5 Learning opportunities that work in any economy:
1) Be a team player - ask to help out in another department or functional area of your company, learning as much as you can in the progress. 2) Volunteer in your community - ask to help out on a project for a church or civic group, or for an association. You may give away your time, but you'll get much more than you give from this experience. 3) Sharpen your "soft skills" - Take a Dale Carnegie course, join Toastmasters, work on your verbal, communication, team-building, and problem-solving skills. Recent surveys have shown these to be the most sought-after skills by the thousands of employers who were interviewed. 4) Keep your technical skills sharp also. Be aware of something called the half-life of knowledge. That is the amount of time that elapses before half of what you know in a given area of expertise is superseded or shown to be untrue. Don't forget to update your resume every time you learn something new. 5) Seek out a mentor - This might be someone at your company, but it doesn't have to be. Find someone who can help you advance yourself in your personal or professional life, and don't be surprised if the knowledge you glean in one area, happens to spill over to all your life areas!
Learn For the Sheer Joy of Learning!
My twin granddaughters are only six months old, but they have become my greatest teachers. They've taught me that we adults really take ourselves much too seriously. We get all worked up over the measurements of our learning, and that we sometimes focus too much on the milestones. We need to remember the pure joy we felt as children just in the act of discovery......"Hey I have hands and feet and toes"!!!..."Hey I learned to count to 10...I know my alphabet!" Can you remember the joy you felt in dancing for the first time? The exhilaration of staying on the bike? Do you remember how your parents cheered you on; how they encouraged you when you fell and had to get up and start over?
When we were small we were happy to learn things. Even if we didn't have it exactly right just yet, we were proud of ourselves. Along the way, we somehow came to the conclusion that only perfect was good enough, and we're oh so busy comparing our scores and achievements to someone else. Too bad for us. Wouldn't it be ridiculous (and cruel) to say to a child, "Well, you missed a word on your spelling test, so just give up spelling from now on." How about, "If you can't stand and walk on the first try, we're giving you up for adoption." We think that's silly, and it would be unforgivable to do to a child, but it's exactly how we treat ourselves. Why can't we go back to learning for the sake of learning? Why can't we just celebrate the fact that we know something today that we didn't know yesterday? And you know what? I bet we could if we tried. |

5 & 1/2 Ways to Enjoy June!
1) Go Berry Picking - You can pick at many farms, and if you're lucky enough to know someone who planted a bumper crop, you can pick for free!
2) Cut Grass- Think of it as healthy exercise, and be grateful for the heavenly aroma of freshly cut grass!
3) Welcome back Hummingbirds and Butterflies - The most beautiful of the bugs and birds are making their way to the northern hemisphere. And on June 21st, so is the Summer Solstice. Enjoy the longest day and shortest night by scoping out our summer beauties.
4) Be on the Lookout for Nests - I have Robins, Doves, Bluebirds, and Swallows nesting in my yard right now. Have you looked high and low and discovered any new neighbors in your yard?
5) Attend a Graduation! - From pre-K to college, learners are celebrating and you can help make their day (not to mention your own). Go out and give our future generations a great big hand!
And the 1/2, you ask? Practice Gratitude! Keep a journal and list 5 things that you have to be grateful for every day. Always stay in gratitude. We have sooo much to be grateful for. If you can't find 100 reasons to be grateful, let me know and I'll send you mine!
